  1. Yeah, maybe that tough guy can put on full body armor then macho around threatening to hit someone. (Excuse me, let me edit that: I mean "The Captain").
  2. I would not want to have been the umpire checking his hands.
  3. When your GM bets on (or enriches himself by) $100 for each RS loss, it's hard to be hopeful. But perhaps Bloom should invest that money not in the Jimmy Fund but in a new publicist.
  4. The Bloom-apology-industrial-complex has worn me out. I'll just chalk it up to the general principle: whenever there is someone with power or money or authority running about, there will NEVER be a lack of sycophants and apologists.
  5. agree! If you're a professional athlete, that should always be your only option. No fan pays money to see you tank or 'rebuild the farm.'
  6. Because the numbers do not support the notion of offensive ineptitude?
  7. Both Bogaerts and Martinez (the 2 you're referring to) are hitting way better than he is. But you're right: they are way behind him in the important stat, which is the amount of money committed to him.
  8. What's Mookie's statement on how he did not want to play for the Sox. I missed it.
  9. Martinez? Well, he may be in an extended slump, but his numbers this year are still better than Story's, better than Verdugo's, better than Pham or what's the Northern exposure guy's name? Of course, not as good as Betts, and about the same as Vasquez.
  10. Yeah, but think of the haul of prospects they must have gotten back.
  11. ERA has always seemed misleading to me. But like other basic, easily calculated stats, it gains in credibility as it confirms/approximates what other stats say. (Of course to judge a stat/piece of evidence solely on the basis of how it conforms to other stats, is completely circular.)
  12. OK. You "have faith in the people who did the math," even though you won't explain the basis of the math. Whereas all the stats/math that you can understand and easily explain (BA, OPS, etc.), you reject. That answers my question.
  13. They don't look 'identical' to me, and Story's year is worlds worse than Bogaerts'. What stats are you looking at?
  14. I have looked it up of course. Many times. And you still did not answer in plain language how you calculate base-running. And how your calculations differ from 'the eye test'. Here, for example, is one of many explanations of how 'runs scored' is calculated: "For batting runs we use a linear weights system based on Tom Tango's wOBA (weighted on-base average) framework, but we add a number of improvements to our calculation of wRAA (weighted runs above average)." Please explain that in a manner that will convince an average reader that you understand it.
  15. Totally agree. I loved the late 50s and early 60s. If you want to win? watch the Celtics. It's like when the Bruins got Bobby Orr.
  16. I still fail to see the winner 'to date' and you also did not explain exactly how he can 'turn the heat on'. Is this by getting hard-nosed during negotiations? (do you think this will make players accept less money to play in Boston? I don't.)
  17. Those of you deriding the "eye-test," please explain in plain language how the various WARs differ; things like 'fielding runs above average,' 'base-running runs' (how does that differ from 'runs scored'?), positional adjustment and easily quantifiable things like that.
  18. ??? (I missed the 'winner' Bloom built, and I fail to see who it is Bloom will turn the heat on. Players to accept half their market value? Other GM's?)
  19. As John Madden once said during a memorable SanDiego game: "They just don't have enough good players." Yes. But what Madden did not say after that was "Therefore they need to get rid of the good players they have."
  20. "Getting exposed" is probably not the right phrase to use in describing RS recent acquisitions.
  21. Pham is not a good outfielder. But I guess his .240 average makes up for it.
  22. Wherever there are uber-rich people, there will be no lack of apologists for them.
  23. The money figures are different, but I know many businesses where you have de facto guaranteed contracts which get paid despite the employees' performance (including the two examples listed below). Board members also continue to serve on boards despite the performance of their company. The point of this discussion, however, is different. In most businesses, the most desirable employees demand the most money. You cannot as a business owner or manager (whether it's Walmart or Hollywood) just say "I'm going to pay my employees less than they could make elsewhere" and expect to get your choice of who to hire.
  24. If paying your employees market value for their services ruins your business, you need a new business model.
  25. Martinez motoring! Yikes!
