  1. Hey, Fred, and you too 700, they've won 5 of their last six! Ok Ok tonight they suck. But aren't we used to that? I believe it was 1988, and I distinctly remember kicking back happily thinking I could relax for the summer, simply rooting for the RS to end .500. Cool. Baseball was fun! Then they went on that insane 20-game winning streak (well, they lost one I think). Serenity gone, anxiety back.
  2. Someone, please delete this and start a real one before the game (such as it is) gets completely out of hand.
  3. Yup, and I'm sure franchises make that argument all the time to agents, where it will fall on deaf ears, since an agent's percentage is based on gross, not net! Also, players will hardly notice the difference in money, but they WILL care about the symbolic value of their listed salary. (I imagine there are a lot of players who think HEY, I make 50Million over five years! which is 'better' than some poor slob who makes a mere $49million in a tax free state. It won't matter that his 'net' may be less.)
  4. If you are making a million+ annually, and you make life-decisions based on your unwillingness to pay state taxes, then you are a materialistic scumbag. The one good thing about rich a-holes smugly heading to Florida for this reason is that they will be more than making up for it with the property taxes on their mega-mansions.
  5. Whether or not we are satisfied or not giving him 3 years is probably less important than whether he decides he would like to get market value for his services, which obviously will require far more than that.
  6. But then, why spend all that money to get the kitchen done right, when you could invest it in a carpentry-apprentice-prospect program for much less and then get it done much cheaper down the road?
  7. Do it! Since Bellh and 5GG never collected on their SeaDogs tix, I'll treat you to front row seats next year if you do and IF (and only if) the RS are ahead of them in the standings as a result. (You pay for the beer.)
  8. Yup. Thus 'specious'; it looks less vacuous than it is.
  9. That is a specious argument: it's like insisting that anyone who criticizes, say, a movie MUST indicate in detail how the script, camera-work, acting could be improved. Or, say, anyone who demands 'there ought to be a law' should be required to explain in detail how that law would be enforced.
  10. The anti-Bogaerts crowd mystifies me, as here, supporting the myth of a Bogaerts "decline." He's leading the league in hitting. (Or does that stat not count!). OK; he's better than his career WAR (whatever that is). Or maybe that doesn't count either. What about the Eye Test? or "small sample size"?
  11. Story drives in runs because of the two .300 hitters in front of him, no?
  12. I hope they try him. They gotta do better than what they've been running out this season--none of whom is anyone you would turn on a game to listen to. Keep looking!
  13. Pats have 16 games in which players get to roll their eyes during pre-game pep talk. Imagine how this would feel to a professional after 100 games.
  14. Maybe Vlad G. would have squared that one up. But let's hope Raffy doesn't go that route.
  15. I agree: the anti-Cora sentiment is just today's version of the constant "Fran-coma" b.s. which wasn't really funny the first time it came up, much less the 1000x. But everyone has their target in a season like this: some choose Bloom, others Henry, others (myself) the obsession with trading away great players for prospects, others are pissed at contracts, or lack of them, others are Bloom or bust apologists. F*ck it. What we think doesn't matter. I have enough people who think I'm an a-hole in life; I don't need more of them on a sports forum. That's what's so great about Eck; he talks off the cuff the same way we do. Only he does it in an amusing, professional, and appealing way. We alas lack his skill
  16. Max, when a guy tries to defuse an argument like Old Red just did, why not just go with it instead of trying to prolong bad feelings.
  17. I don't miss Gansett, but I sure miss their ads. Call me a taxi.
  18. I don't understand the myth that AGon was a bust here. He hit exactly as expected and better than his average. So did JD Drew who also got a lot of heat. You can't blame players for playing up to their abilities when you are hoping (with no evidence) that they'll play better than that.
  19. In all fairness, the first called strike was almost in the same location. He likely felt he had to hack at anything up.
  20. They need to get Devers right, or at least figure out what is wrong. If that means sitting him the rest of the season, then fine. No one that good should be having a month like this.
  21. Mid 70s? What about the 20 years of despair before that?
  22. Yes yes. I agree. As would anyone. But again, given the situation on contracts, please explain how you get the best players without committing to long-term contracts? (I'm pretty sure this is a question most GMs including Bloom think about every day.)
  23. Ha! Well, I want a pony.
  24. Maybe (as I did in another thread), Bloom mis-read a report that said Ryan had a 100mph fastball and could easily pitch over 200 innings a year.
  25. Yes, but the point is still "How do you get the best players in baseball if you are not willing to give out long-term contracts?" If you're not willing to pay market value, you won't get them. You may well be right that long-term contracts are bad. But that doesn't change the basic situation.
