  1. I am beginning to suspect the owners are planting stories in the media. Today i read that "the fans" are deeply concerned about "payroll disparity." Say what? The fans don't give a crap about that! any more than they care that the star of a movie makes millions and an extra barely makes a day's pay. Find me one fan who says "I'm damned if I'm going to the game, as Ohtani makes 700 bazillion but Joey Schmuck makes the rookie minimum." I will believe the b.s. the owners say as soon as they open the books for public inspection. Until they do that, i'm with the players union all the way. (Despite the sexual scandal, which of course rich f*ck owners NEVER get involved in.)
  2. No way! i actually want to see ohtani, betts, dela cruz, and i'm hardly alone in this. i don't want to see extra games against baltimore or tampa bay instead. Getting rid of interleague play is so so 70s. (Who was that sanctimonious a-h who vowed to spend his entire life after retirement fighting to get rid of interleague play? ... brett butler.)
  3. But wasn't that the case years ago with the cancelled WS? That the strike/lockout occurred before the expiration? Can't remember. REVISE: just looked it up. You're right. That season they were essentially playing without a new CBA in place. So no fears for this year, unless the world ends and all humans perish. If that happens, I doubt we'll miss them much.
  4. Is it possible the season will not play out? I'm sure the owners are salivating at the news that Tony Clark had an 'inappropriate relationship', as we KNOW that owners of sports franchises have absolutely spotless ethical histories. There is also, of course, the matter of 'misappropriation' of union funds; and again, the owners, having completely transparent finances, are beyond reproach. If it gets ugly (and how can it not?), I'm kinda curious as to how many (more) franchise owners are going to find themselves in the Epstein files. If we can't have baseball, we might as well have scandal. I'm hoping both sides realize if they don't settle, it's basically no holds barred. I'm not shedding any tears for Tony Clark, but it will be amusing to see how many owners are willing to go down (maybe not the right phrase!) with him.
  5. Again, even at the cost of the greatness the RS have shown in the last 5 years, I'd rather be watching these guys and even add Beni or Vaz year after year than the sometimes highly paid Rent-a-Wrecks they got to replace them. My sense of well-being does not depend on 'my' team winning championships or saving money for ownership. I didn't stop following the RS in the 50s and 60s because they sucked or had bad xWAR or cost that racist f*ck Yawkey too much. I stayed with them because I had a rough idea of who would be playing from year to year and could follow their careers, good and bad. I realize this may make me subject to the criticism that I'm 'disloyal' to the team, 'not a real fan', or that I just 'don't know anything about baseball or the modern sports business'.
  6. Sorry. I realize I was stretching what you said. But at least for me, the RS would be a much more enjoyable team if they had followed suit. I'd love to be watching an infield of Devers, Betts, and xander, even if it meant giving up all the WS wins we've had since trading Mookie.
  7. It's really bizarre to hear RS fans (whose team dealt/released/drove out two All-Star players, one an MVP, [not to mention losing Bregman] getting absolutely nothing in return) deride other front offices for not knowing what they're doing.
  8. i'd post a number, but I'm afraid someone might do something unfair, like offer someone more money than we do, or spend more and ruin not only our season but baseball generally.
  9. Mid-50s temps. ... Oh yes. We have that. But only if you add two or three days' highs together.
  10. The idea being if you sling enough onto the wall. some of it has gotta stick? So when 1 of these works out, he will attribute it all to his Yale education?

I'm guessing one of the producers spoke to her. The ones for Japan/Sweden are ok. Women's hockey is great, as action is not interrupted with gratuitous and often staged violence. I'm wondering what the men's will look like. Rink size should prevent it from being clogged up.
  12. Bunting was bad way before the shift started (there were articles showing that as early as the 60s), and the fact that the shift has come and gone has not changed matters.
  13. So Devers for a ,250 hitter "good at bunting"? Damn! Can't wait for those exciting plays that decades before Moneyball were shown to be negatives.

To anyone who thinks announcing of pro sports is bad, check out the women's hockey, where one of the announcers talks about nothing other than her own self-proclaimed-glorious hockey career. Unlistenable--worse than Hubey Brown and Tony Romo.
  15. Anyone up for a few prop bets on a closer?
  16. Disagree. I think cats are complete dumb-asses and PRETEND to be aloof to persuade you to think (wrongly) they're smart. Dogs, on the other hand, are completely secure in their intellectual abilities and only act like dumb-asses because they know you will reward them for it.
  17. I see occasional signs of feral cats here, but the local fishers apparently keep teh population in check.
  18. Damn, I HAD to look that up. (Being high might have spurred me on.). Most snakes have no problem--they just burrow--rattlesnakes in big snake-balls--YUCH. But pythons are vulnerable and start to shut down in anything under 50 degrees. Since they're tropical, I guess, they haven't evolved any obvious defenses--Hey, dude, how about like BURYING YOURSELF IN THE WARM EARTH? OK. I feel I've had enough intellectual advancement for one day.
  19. Wow that Devers trade keeps paying HUGE divedends.
  20. Ah yes, the ole 'bad team-mate' ploy. The only people who would know are other players, and I'm still waiting to hear a statement from any of them supporting this theory, as there were some (including Bregman) who flat out denied it.
  21. Bluffing? Posturing? Lines in the sand? No way. I, like most sports fans, believe in COMPLETE transparency and openness and trust that all organizations feel the same way. Not for one minute do I believe such dastardly things as you suggest go on in sports.
  22. Exactly. We would NEVER do such a thing. Nor would we offer more for a player who already had an offer o the table, because we believe in competitive balance and a level playing field would NEVER try to use our wealth to give us an advantage.
  23. Probably so. Because it's never us or 'our guys' who are responsible for strikes/lockouts in sports , nor for any other bad thing.
  24. i know. That's what made it so astounding. For a while, he was the ONLY mlb player drawing any kind of salary and hadn't been on the field for decades.
