Of course 'the closer model' works. Because most of the time, the team with the closer is 1-3 runs ahead with less than an inning to play. That is like saying 'the prevent defense works more often than not'; well, yes, because you use it when you are ahead late in the game and your chances of winning are best. Finally, on poor Calvin Shiraldi. Obviously, not a great pitcher, but without him, they would never have been in position to win or lose the WS. ALso, as I remember he was one pitch away from winning several times in that inning, and the 'hits' that beat him were ground balls through the hole that might just as well have been right at the SS. (May be wrong on this.)

Ortiz made the off-hand remark years ago that he had 'no idea' what kind of stuff players in the Domincan R were given. Fair enough. Also, what he's angry about is that his name was leaked in what was supposed to be a confidential study. That's what he means about someone out to get him. As for the rest, who cares whether he's different from A-rod? We're fans; they are professional entertainers. I'm a RS fan, but ARod is one of the greatest hitters I've seen. As long as they aren't murderers, rapists, crass racists, and the like, I really don't care about the personal lives of the players or the precise ways they bend rules about conditioning. The reason pro sports has rightly come down on steroids, is that they realize young stupid kids will be emulating whatever the pro's do; but what they seem to have done in their stupid hysteria is prove that certain kinds of PEDs in fact work.

Well, a 1 game lead now. With a feeble line-up: Els not hitting; Napoli a K-machine; Holt and Snyder (who?); gomes (who gets the Youk award for being a self-proclaimed 'dirt-dog' and 'gamer' while hitting under .250); Drew (the usual). That line-up is threatening to look like the triple-A lineup we saw late last year. Not there, of course; just threatening.

Also, when Els came up, he hit fine--hits to all fields. Bradley is great to watch, but he was completely over-matched when he came up this spring. (The 'soft' label on JE is of course only relative to the extraordinary tough-ness of ESPN posters who claim this.)

MVP: You left out Cabrera, who replaced Nomar and led to a WS. If that hadn't magically worked out, maybe they would have stayed with him a few years rather than going with Renteria, then the crown jewell of the lot--Lugo.

Just a question on that last play, but it comes up occasionally. Note that the runner on second never bothers to go to third. In this case, with 1 out, it doesn't matter. But that's a potential force-out, and with two outs, say, a force out anywhere would cancel the run, no matter how far the ball is hit. Anyone know if there's some rule on walk-offs about fielder's indifference (as here, where the CF essentially conceded the run).

That said, I really do hope you're all right. It's just that the RS have not had a good record trading away SS's, each time getting rid of a competent one and replacing him with someone more expensive and not as good, hoping they could find the lightning in the bottle they found getting rid of Nomar. Looked like the streak ended with Lugo, but after today, I'm not sure. Nor am I sure why Drew's multi-million .226 average or Snyder's cheaper .212 or M'B's sub .200 is so impressive, except for the fact that all of them will spend a lot of time on the bench or DL and consequently will do little harm.

Hard to argue with a guy with a Nixon avatar, but I ask again, have you actually seen Middlebrooks 'swing the bat' (if you can call it that) at Pawtucket? Did you watch any of his performance this year? What makes you think he can get back to a year like he had his rookie year?

Yes. And he will have a lot more with his speed. Meanwhile, we can look forward to Middlebrooks at third, -- have you seen him swing the bat recently at Pawtucket? RS will have a washed up minor-leaguer, and a platoon of 220 hitters with average fielding: Snyder, Drew, MIddlebrooks, and a completely unproven one (Boggaerts). Igl. proved he could get on base, put the bat on the ball, and play several positions, and that he was one of the best fielders around. For this, they now have yet another over-age starting pitcher, with a high salary, and an ERA of 4+.
