Valentine is clearly a superior in-game tactician. Francona was better at other things, but he SUCKED at in-game tactics. Horrible at it.

I think that overall Valentine has done a pretty good job with certain parts of his job-bunting when indicated, encouraging aggressive baserunning, removing pitchers in a timely manner and using his pen wisely (and forming it from a bunch of rejects), and pinch hitting when indicated. Francona would likely have cost us several games already because all he ever did was sit and spit out tobacco juice when he should have acted.

Seems to me that Agon has to keep his head up and make sure the base he is trying for is actually vacant before he motors on to second base.

Wow. Buchholz got transfused 4 units of blood in the hospital. He must have bled a ton. You gotta bleed quite a bit to get even one unit. Scary. Ibuprofen is not a benign drug.

I think he did pretty well last time out (or one of the last outings against the Sox) against us. Generally though, he does suck against us. I think he is 8-1 coming into this game (?)

Apparently the Yankees are having some "luck" coming their way too: NEW YORK -- Yankees ace CC Sabathia is heading to the disabled list with a strained muscle in his left leg. With all the extra body weight CC carries around this could take some time to heal. TOOOOOOOOOO BAD!

Its very very early to get too excited about his prospects of becoming a dominant SP-way too early. Give him half a year of doing it minimum. Meanwhile, I'll take what I can get from him. Every outing is not going to be dominant.

Buchholz to the DL with GI bleeding

Thats possible. I remember seeing one patient with an esophageal ulcer who "dry swallowed" her tetracycline, which she was taking for acne. This was a mistake, to say the least. One of the pills failed to make it into the stomach from the esophagus, instead, lodging there and eating away at her membranes. I am not sure if Ibuprofen can cause similar problems, but it wouldn't surprise me. All those NSAIDs are not quite as harmless as they were first thought to be when they came out. GI bleeding is not an uncommon side effect. In any event, he should recover and eventually make it back. This is not career threatening, fortunately. -
Had the FO been quicker on the trigger to get him out of the starting rotation he might have been more salvageable. The longer you practice bad habits and the more confidence you lose the harder it is for you to get back into proper form. Yes, most of this is Bard's fault. But I think that some of the blame has to be shared by the FO.

Here is the latest on CB. Seems to be esophagitis and nothing more serious:. But the team issued a statement. "Clay Buchholz has esophagitis, which led to an erosion of the esophagus and an associated gastrointestinal bleed. He has been evaluated and observed at Mass General Hospital. Clay is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery." Buchholz was put on the 15-day disabled list Sunday. -
Most significant is the degree that the games hinge more and more on starting pitching as the season grinds on....to the point where even powerhouse offenses simply get controlled by the better pitchers in baseball....you see it time and time again, year in and year out. We have had our SP for the bulk of the season. They have not suffered catastrophic season ending injuries to the mainstays of the rotation. We do know what they have though and like it or not....it just ain't enough. Jung Truer words were never written.

Not as a rental, no. I would want the pitcher we get to be on our team for at least three years (or two and a half, actually). No handing away our top prospects for rentals.
