  1. The Sox SP staff as of now includes Buchholtz, Lester, Doubront and Lackey. On paper it is the weakest in the AL East. Based on last years results that is proven. Of the four pitchers I don't know if you can say with confidence that you know what to expect from any of them. SP is still a major need for the Sox and they need to start making some noise in this area or 2013 will be a repeat of 2012. There is a need of two solid arms and I don't know if you can count on any of the kids to be ready for 2013.
  2. Don't know what to think about this. Nieves doesn't have a track record as a major league pitching coaches.
  3. Its possible, but I can't see Grienke here because he is going to want the years (The dollars aren't the problem for the Sox its the 5 or 6 years that he would want). They will not commit to a FA pitcher like that after the Lackey signing. As far as Hamilton I can only see the Sox offer a 2 or 3 year contract (They wish it could be 2) at big $$$$$$$. A Hamilton signing (For 2 or 3 years) would make the Gomes signing a lot more acceptable though.
  4. I think Gomes was brought in to platoon with a healthy Kalish or someone else). I think if you compare the platoon numbers with C Ross numbers you don't lose with the bat. Ross is not that great with the glove, but Gomes is a drop off from that. Overall, I think the Sox lose a little with this signing unless they have upgrades at 1B and the other OF position that will balance out this signing. For what ever its worth Gomes was a positive influence in the young A's clubhouse and was loved by his teammates.
  5. I think the Sox set a value on the resigning of Cody Ross and he asked for more. Ross was brought into Boston as a platoon player and played a lot more then that because of all the injuries. I don't think he would be receptive to less playing time in a platoon situation. Gomes was brought in to platoon and has excepted that role. Gomes will give you the power that Ross did, but you probably lose a little with the glove (An Ross was no gold glover). Remember Ellsbury is in center and covers a lot of territory. With that said I think the Sox loss a little if Gomes was signed to replace Ross, but it might balance itself out if the Sox bring in up grades at 1B and the other outfield position.
  6. Because of injuries last season I think Ross played more then the Sox would have liked (I think they wanted more a platoon role for him). Now Ross wants 3 years with a large raise in pay. If the Sox still have a vision of a platoon situation I don't know if Ross would be receptive to less playing time. The Gomes signing sets up that platoon situation with a healthy Kalish (Hopefully) or someone else. Gomes has excepted that role based on everything I have read. His teammates love him. Gomes has power that should play in Fenway. He hit 18 hr in 279 ABs last year playing half his games in a pitchers park. Now both players are below average with the glove (Ross was no gold glover), but remember Ellsbury plays center and covers a lot of ground. Gomes also brings a lot to the club house and is similiar to bringing in Ross as part of the catching position.
  7. The Sox lack of SP in '12 was the heart of their problems and every time a SP comes of the market it is a little concerning. If the Sox don't improve their SP it will be another long season in the improving AL East.
  8. The baseball writers agreed with you because Miggy won the MVP.
  9. As much as '75,'86 and '03 hurt I rather go through that then '12. There was a lot of enjoyable moments in those three seasons because the Sox did a lot of winning. I rather go through another one of those seasons then another '12.
  10. I was just watching MLB Network and they were replaying the Cabrera interview after he was awarded the MVP. I guess I wasn't the only person who doesn't know what I'm talking about. All the name calling kind of takes from your argument. I have experienced when people start calling others names it is because they don't think they have an argument that is a winner.
  11. BC's words and actions have not been in line this of season, unless he has been in discussion with teams and FA setting up deals with both. I think the Nation has a fear of last off season and repeating that and then going through another 2012 season in 2013.
  12. If we are still writing the same things after the winter meetings then we have a major problem. Until then, hopefully we don't fall further behind division vivals.
  13. MVPs get their team to the playoffs. Cabrera got his team to the playoffs, and the last I checked the Angels did not make the playoffs. Since 1942 only four other guys have won the triple crown: Mr. Williams (twice), Mickey Mantle, Frank Robinson and Yaz. Pretty good company.
  14. BV doesn't know when to shut his mouth. At this pace we will all be swimming across rivers to get to the other side because Bobby will have burned every last bridge. Every time he opens his mouth nothing good comes out. He probably did get a raw deal in 2012, but if he has any plans of managing again (Don't see it) he has to shut up.
  15. Any future FA will avoid the Marlins and their verbal no-trade agreements. Both Reyes and Buerhle are not happy campers because of the sh_ _ that the Marlins pulled. An Stanton is pissed and will leave as soon as he can. As far as Hamilton and any possibility of the Sox showing interest in him, if they do it has to be a short years contract at big $$$$. If Hamilton sees that there is no long term contract out there he might take a 2 year 25 mil contract from the Sox. If it doesn't work and it blows up the experiment is over in two years and the kids will be ready by then. If it does work then they can approach Hamilton like they did Ortiz or just let him walk with the kids ready at that point. Hamilton would probably be at the stage in his career that he moves to DH at that point. That can only happen if there are no long term contracts out there for him.
  16. Anyone who wins the triple crown is the MVP in my book.
  17. I didn't want Melky and his baggage as well, but you hate to see division rivals improve while the Sox remain the last place team that finished 2012.
  18. Toronto signed Melky and look like they are going for it in 2013. I hope their is a Sox plan or it could a long 2013 with Sox finishing in last again. BC is saying all of the right things, but actions speak louder then words. I'm hoping the Sox make a splah at the winter meetings because I'm tried of seeing everyone else in the division improve themselves.
  19. Can anyone think of a ten year contract that a team didn't end up regreating the deal?
  20. If this trade happens then the Sox fall a little further behind a division rival. The Jays will be adding two quality arms to their rotation and an all-star SS. It just made the Sox job back to respectibility a lot harder. If all three are healthy the Jays just improved their team a lot.
  21. Napoli wants to be seen as a catcher first, and then seen as a DH-1B. Don't think the Sox need to bring in another catcher whose defense is questionable. Based on the SP struggle the last couple of seasons we need catching the game to be a strength.
  22. I think Valverde's value crashed because his collapse in the playoffs. It shouldn't be a surprise because his season had some rocky patches. I wouldn't touch him. I would take a chance on a healthy Soria on a one year deal. Thats what KC did with Broxton last season.
  23. Cubs need a catcher and could be a potential trading partner.
  24. I agree that the Ross signing is a positive. Quality backup catcher, and is a positive influence in the club house. Good character guy. Plus, now the Sox have another trading chip with the surplus of catchers. There are several teams in need of a catcher and could be potential trading partners for the Sox.
  25. The Ross signing allows the Sox to move a catcher for another piece (Salty most likely). There are a lot of teams in need of a catcher and now the Sox have a trading chip. Ross is a quality backup catcher and will be a positive influence in the club house.
