  1. Remember these short term deals this off season allow the Sox to continue to bring their youth along slowly. They might have given some of these guys big $$$$, but they kept the years short. Most of youth are targeted to join the show in 2013 or 2014. The hope is most of them reach their potential and the Sox will have a contending team for years. The FO then can target FA who fill holes that the system could not. A successful system also allows for trades for key pieces.
  2. Day 27 of the Napoli thing. This is getting old real fast. The time this thing is settled the Sox could still be without a 1B. They need production from that position (power).
  3. If the Sox get innings from their starters the bullpen could be good. If the bullpen is not over used early on it has a chance to be a strength for them. If the starters consistenly don't go deep into the game then the bullpen will be over used and it will explode like it did last year. Once again the 2013 season rest in the arms of the SPs. I like the potential of the pen.
  4. Thank you Cleveland for signing Swisher. If Victorino hits for average in the long run the Sox will be alright in RF. His defense in the OF is way better then Swisher. He is a top of the order guy who can get on base, steal them, and score runs. You lose some power, but I think the D will make up for a lot of that.
  5. Sox will only compete in the AL East if they get consistent SP in 2013. Lester and Buchholtz have to be top of the rotation starters that are more consistent. Doubront has to make the next step, and Lackey needs to be the Lackey of the Angel years. An Dempster needs to eat innings and have success in the AL. There are a lot of ifs here . . . but the Sox will only be as good as these guys.
  6. As of today, M Gomez is the only 1B on the 40 man roster. The whole Napoli thing is a problem for the Sox. The team remains in limbo at 1B as this thing drags on. The longer they wait to make a decision on this the less options they have. LaRoche's name came up again, he is a solid Defensive 1B but there is the whole draft pick thing to think of. Are there any other 1B out there to trade for? We do have exter RP and C to trade if that could bring back a 1B.
  7. None of the players the Sox gave up in the trade were going to play major roles for them in 2013. Hopefully, Hanrahan has the success as closer in Boston that he did in Pittsburgh. He is an upgrade over Melcanon (only player in trade who had a major league role in 2012) in the bullpen so the trade inproves the bullpen without weakening any other part of the team.
  8. Reports I've read is a 2 for 4 trade. Not all of the names are coming out. The Sox get Hanrahan for Pimentel and Sands. Melancon name is being mentioned, but haven't seen where his name and the other players are mentioned. I think is an upgrade to the pen.
  9. Cubs made his dream come true.
  10. I guess we have to be prepared for the worst, and hope for the best. On paper the Sox are out of the playoffs, but it would be nice if they are playing meaningful games in September.
  11. I think Lester is still a young lefty and you can't give up on him. There is a fine line between being effective and getting rocked. Lester is not that far removed from having success, and if he is not hurt then you got to hope he has a bounce back year. The bottom line the Sox don't compete unless Lester has some success in 2013.
  12. Very little noise about Napoli and the issues. I think Napoli got hurt getting his physical and the FO doesn't know how to break the news to the Nation. If he has a potential long term problem, I think the Sox have to take a pass and move on.
  13. How would Hanrahan do in Boston? Sometimes small market NL stats don't fly in Boston. We went though that last year with Melancon. I think Hanrahan has better stuff, but its still a unknown what he would be able to do under the bright lights of Boston.
  14. Sox probably over paid for Drew, but its for only one year. His numbers last year are off because an injury he was recovering from. Its probably his job heading into spring, and it would take a hell of a spring by Iglesias to take the starting job back. Ciriaco comes off the bench and Iggy starts the year at AAA. This will be his last year to prove to the FO he can hit.
  15. Long term success comes with teams that consistently have solid drafts and have minor league systems that can mold them into productive major leaguers.
  16. It just won't look right with Youk in pinstrips and no facial hair. Say it isn't so.
  17. Other then Drew you haven't heard the Sox interested in any SS. I think they give Iglesias a shot in the spring. May even give him a couple of months at the begining of 2013.
  18. Brentz's stock has gone up over the last year. A signing of Swisher now would probably block him. Swisher is going to want more then the 3 years at 13 million. I think we may see him (Brentz) some time next season.
  19. So far it looks like they are going with their youth. All FA signings are short term contracts, and no top prospect were moved. It would be nice if they could be competitive why we wait for the kids to arrive. I don't want to go through another season like 2012.
  20. Ellsbury probably staying the season with the Sox. No team is going to give equal value for him since it is his walk year and Borus is his agent. Borus will take him to FA and look for big $$$ and length. The Sox will hopefully get a big year out of him at least. If they weren't going to resign him they probably should have moved him after his big 2011 season when they probably could have gotten some top prospects.
  21. With are luck LaRoche would resign with Nats before we get this Napoli contract settled one way or the other. It seems the FO is always a step behind on every player they claim they have an interest in.
  22. After his quick start post trade to White Sox, Youk's numbers tailed off. The W-Sox not bringing him back says to me that two teams think he is done as a every day player. If the $panks run him out there every day he will get injuried, and there will be a decline in his production.
  23. Plus he has had some success in the AL, unlike Dempster.
  24. I always wanted LaRoche over Napoli. He gives you the offence, but also has a solid glove.
  25. Swisher's value went up with Hamilton signing with the Angels. Teams looking for RF with some pop will target Swisher. He is looking for more then three years, and I hope that means the Sox stay clear. I rather bring Ross back then Swisher. Sox do probably need a OF that can play 1B, but Swisher isn't that guy.
