    I think Workman is key to what the Sox do before the trading deadline. He has one more start before the deadline and if he has another solid start then the Sox go out and get bullpen help with the thought of keeping him in the rotation until Buchholtz comes back. If he has a bad outing against the O's then the Sox go after a starter (Peavy maybe), and maybe a lesser piece for the pen with the thought of moving Workman to the pen. Either way the Sox will pick up another pitcher. It would be nice if some of their young pitchers stepped up.

    With the value of what is left on his contract at worst he could be a solid middle of the rotation pitcher. If for some reason the Sox aren't in contention next season you can then listen to offers for him. After getting little value out of at the beginning of the contract it is great to have some value now.

    WMB continues to struggle in AAA. I do not think we will see him back in Boston in 2013. With the potential log jam on the left side of the infield he could become an off season trading chip.

    Cecchini has a sweet swing, but where do the Sox play him?

    I think the next week and a half will go along way in determining how the Sox finish in 2013. They play the Rays and O's and the trading deadline will have come and gone. I think you can answer the question on how the Sox will finish on August 1.

    When will we see Bogaerts in Boston? September? April 2014? June 2014?

    Who would of thought that the Sox problem this past off season of having two closers and not knowing who should be the closer, would turn into a problem to having your set up man become your closer. I for one am concerned about over using Uehara and him burning out before the end of the season. Remember in the beginning of the season there was the talk of not using him on back to back days. I also have not been impressed with Thornton in his first couple of outings. He has allowed runners on base when he enters to score that are charged to the pitcher he replaced. The Sox need another arm for their pen.

    If the Sox don't correct their starting pitching problems both the Rays and the Orioles will pass them and they will not make the playoffs. Without a more effective Lester and a healthy Buchholtz they will not make the playoffs. Pushing Lester back is concerning because you won't know what that is all about until you see him pitch again. Because they are involved in discussions with other teams about starting pitching they aren't going to disclose injuries until they have to. If Tuesday comes and Lester doesn't pitch then we have a major problem not only with the current rotation, but also in making a trade for a starter as teams will know the Sox are desperate.

    The Sox are going to have to make a decision in the next week and half. At this point no one knows when Buchholtz will be able to pitch again. If the Rays come in next week and their starters out pitch the Sox starters they could leave town in first place. If that happens I can see the Sox targeting a starter before the trade deadline. If the Sox hold their own or gain ground on the Rays they might feel that they have enough to hold them until Buchholtz can come back. They do need another arm in the bullpen though.

    The Rays pitching depth allowed them to give up Shields to the Royals because they so needed a bat for their lineup. It was around the time that they brought Myers up is when they got hot. Because Sales is under control of the White Sox for a longer period they are not going to trade him. They will build their team around him. The Sox do need a starter and another arm for the bullpen. At this point I don't think anyone can tell you when Buchholtz is going to pitch. The Sox could find themselves out of first by the end of next week with the white hot Rays coming to town. With all that said, unless you are getting an ace back you can not trade Bogaerts.

    Don't think the Sox make the playoffs if they can't straighten Lester out. He seems to be throwing the ball as hard as in the past so it has to be above the shoulders problem.

    If WMB can't figure it out the Sox have two potential 3B already waiting in the wings to play third in Boston. Both Bogaerts and Cecchini have impressed with the bat and look to be on track to make the show very quickly.

    I'm surprised Aceves lasted this long. He cleared waivers so the Sox aren't the only team that doesn't think he is worth the trouble. With chemistry being a big part of the success so far this season, and Aceves not producing like he has in the past its a wise decision that the Sox don't want the head case in Boston.

    I still feel that the Sox need Lester to be better for long term success this season. Based on some of his outings this season I feel he has the ability to right the ship and be the old Lester. He is still young, homegrown and a lefty so the Sox are going to stick with him long term as well.

    Good pitching beats good hitting every time. As far as the above debate goes good teams have a balanced approach to the question. They have the ability to score runs and at the same time prevent them.

    I agree. Lackey and Doubrount were your number 4 and 5 starters at the beginning of the season and lately they have been your most consistent starters. A healthy Buchholtz and a better Lester down the stretch would be helpful for the Sox playoff chances.

    Rays schedule does get harder after the All-Star break. If the Sox get to that part of the schedule still in first, and if they can avoid injuries they should be okay. They need to avoid the wild card game. That one and done is a tough one.

    I agree. Buchholtz is scheduled for another bullpen this weekend and if all goes well he will go to AAA to pitch a couple games. Hopefully, we hold the fort and he comes back where he left off.

    I agree. Lackey is probably the Sox number 1 right now, but he is not an ace. Aces do it for a long period of time.

    Talk about a turnaround. Grant it the division sucks, but the Dodgers are within striking distance of first place. This wasn't what this thread was talking about when it was created.

    The A's are playing good baseball right now and their pitching is tough. I think the Sox starters for the weekend are Lackey, Lester, and to be announced. Of those three Lackey is the only one pitching consistently right now (Never thought I would be saying that) so the thought of a Sox sweep is not looking promising. If we can end up 5 and 5 on this west coast trip I would sign up for that. The Rays schedule gets harder after the All-Star break. They are now playing a weak part of their schedule: Pale Sox, Twins and Astros. So if the Sox can hold them off going into the break they will be in better shape.

    MLB not going to announce any decision until after the ALL-STAR game. Any one who is associated with this and is in a contract year could be effected by this. Even if the appeals last a long time teams aren't going to want anything to do with these guys.

    Papi dropped the pounds and now is a demon on the base paths with his 3 for 3 stealing of bases.

    The Sox should be seeing if any of these young arms they have in the minors can help them out of the pen these last few weeks of July. If no one is found then use some of the minor league trading chips they have to get a reliever from another big league roster. Bullpen is going to need some help or they will get over worked and become non-effective.

    The year the Rays went to the World Series they used David Price out of the pen and he was quite effective. Not saying the De La Rosa is Price, but could see him in a similar role that Price filled for the Rays when they went to the WS. There has been talk that De La Rosa could be a future closer so there is some belief that he could be effective out of the pen.
