  1. If the Sox can get through the rest of August and be in the same position that they are in now that would be great. I'm concerned that the Rays and $panks are ending the month on hot streaks and the Sox continue to play .500 baseball. Losing series to last place Jays and potentially to the last place Giants has to concern you. If we can get to September in the position we are in the schedule favors them a little bit. Because the Sox have played more games they have more off days which will allow them to line up their pitching better. Hopefully, September also means the return of a healthy Buchholtz.
  2. If $$$$ where not part of the equation then yes I would resign Ellsbury. He has proven when healthy he can be productive in Boston. He also gives the Sox a lead off hitter who can steal bases (hard to find these) and a very good defensive CF. I would love to pencil in a Bradley-Ellsbury-Victorino outfield. With that said Ellsbury is not a 20 million a year player. Also, long term the older he gets the SBs will start to decrease and the defense probably won't be as good. The Sox could offer him a contract at a value and years that they think he is worth. Lets say 5 years at 17 million per. They could get creative and offer larger $$$$ over 3 years and not have to pay for the decline years. I don't think they should go past 5 years though. I hate to see him go, but I don't want an A-Fraud or Albert P. contract that will be a disaster in the later years.
  3. I'll trust that Lester is back when he does what he did to the offensive challenged Giants to the $pankees, O's and Rays. He looked good Monday in a game the Sox needed the starter to go deep. He has the Dodgers this weekend lets see how he does.
  4. Buchholtz threw another positive bullpen yesterday. Getting a healthy Buchholtz back for the stretch run would be huge for the Sox. If you make 92 wins the magic number to make the playoffs then this is what teams have to do to reach that: (Detroit and Texas win their divisions) Sox 19-18 .514 TB 23-18 .561 Balt 26-14 .650 $panks 29-11 .725 Cleve 26-13 .667 KC 28-12 .700 Oak 23-17 .575 Sox play teams within their division a lot so going .500 against them won't hurt them as much as the teams below them. If the Sox can't reach 92 wins then they weren't just good enough.
  5. I can see a Carp and a right handed hitting 1B platoon in 2014. I don't think Nap comes back.
  6. I agree, he fits perfectly in Detroit. They had a bad defensive team and Iggy at SS will go a long way in improving that. Their lineup allows them to have the light hitting SS. Even though they have some problems at the back end of their bullpen I think they are still the team to beat in the AL. Meanwhile, the Sox need more offense at SS thus Bogaerts is the future.
  7. When it comes down to big $$$$ (Shields) and young players (Myers) the Rays always go with the youth. Their limited budget makes that decision for them.
  8. I like Carp. He has been very productive with his playing time this year. Abreu is someone to look at, but if its Wily Mo power we are looking at I don't know. We have a 1B this year that strikeout more then I care for.
  9. The next two weeks will go along way in determining that for the Sox. West coast after the ESPN Sunday night game.
  10. Good point! If a guy has high on base guys ahead of him he can have a lot of RBIs that he makes an out.
  11. 15 - Played a big role today and didn't have a hit.
  12. Three keys today: 1. Lackey came up big (Ton of ground balls) 2. Pedrioa's D 3. Sox taking advantage of $pankee poor D
  13. The $panks old lefty made Drew look sick until he ran out of gas. His error also opened up the flood gates. Part of playing him at SS over the kids (Iggy first and now Bogaerts) was he would not make those youthful mistakes in the heat of the playoff race. After last nights performance the heat has been turned up.
  14. There is a difference between losing and getting blown out. Last nights game hopefully was the low point of this losing streak. The Sox sucked in all areas of the game: Starting pitching, defense, base running and with the bat. They were never in last nights game and were blown out. Everyone is taking about the Rays and are ignoring the $pankees. They play the Sox 9 more times, and most of their other remaining games are against AL East teams. If they go on one of those Dodger streaks they could catch everyone because they play so many games against these teams. Not making the playoffs is one thing, but if the $panks blow by us and make it that will be tough to take. What Reynolds did in his first AB last night is a bad sign.
  15. The Flying Hawaiian did it again last night in the 11 inning. He has performed well when in the lineup. He is that character guy that BC probably over spent to get, but has been a vital part of the Sox success. I'm glad the Sox got him and not Swisher who was in the mix. How many balls did Victorino get to that would still be bouncing around if Swisher was in RF?
  16. No way the Sox get him without giving up the farm. Lets say the Sox make the trade and lose 4 or 5 of their top prospects. Stanton then either gets hurt or bombs in Boston. It would set the Sox back a great deal. I say push forward with their plan and only consider Stanton if the price comes down.
  17. I agree. If you played him more against righties you would probably have another Napoli.
  18. It was a sh@# load! He is becoming a rally killer. If he doesn't start hitting I would start to platoon him with Carp.
  19. Crazy stat! Tazawa still has been good most of the season. Sometimes it happens because these teams face each other so much.
  20. Tazawa and Uehara will both pass their season high IP. The hope is both will hold up and be as effective. The Sox have more days off then TB and Balt in September and that will allow for more potential rest in the closing month of the season. The older Uehara will need it coming down the home stretch.
  21. WMB has looked better at the plate in the first couple of games back. If he gives you solid D, .250 BA ,and a threat of power the rest of the season then the Sox upgraded from the Snyder/Holt platoon that was starting to struggle.
  22. Don't have any confidence that Napoli will come up big in a tough spot. He will easily pass 200 strikeouts in a season and not reach 20 HR. If someone is going to strike out that much they have to hit north of 30 HR. The one year contract was a blessing, and the Sox should move on in 2014.
  23. If I was BC I would put the 5 year 20 million on the table. If Ellsbury takes it you have a Bradley-Ellsbury-Victorino OF in 2014. That is a great defensive outfield. If he doesn't then he really doesn't want to be in Boston. Some team will go over the 20 million a year mark for him though.
  24. I like the thought of a Bradley - Ellsbury - Victorino outfield, but Ellsbury would have to take less then he could get on the open market. He will not (Boras will not) take the 6 years at 90 million. It will take 110 to 120 million. If you let Drew and Napoli walk, and play Bradley LF - Bogaerts at SS - Carp 1B the money you will save will allow them to sign Ellsbury. I keep Salty (knows the staff and you get enough with the bat) at reasonable $$$$$, because an investment in McCann and catchers in general is a big risk. 1B Carp (probably need a right handed bat against tough lefties) 2B Pedroia SS Bogaerts 3B WMB LF Bradley (Gomes can still play against lefties) CF Ellsbury RF Victorino C Salty / Ross DH Papi
  25. I don't know how he would do against left handed pitching. Most of his playing time has come against righties and he has been productive against them most of the season. Defensively he has been okay at 1B. If you had a right handed bat that could play against tough lefties and also play some OF then I don't see why the Sox couldn't play Carp at 1B next year. His bat has been good all season. Napoli has not given the Sox enough power to off set the high strikeout total. By season's end he will have the Sox single season K record. That one year contract is looking good.
