  1. Bloom has played a role in adding many new young faces to our minor league programs. A few of our young pitchers are showing some good potential. I keep waiting for that first no brainer sure thing to hop off the page to impress and i don't see him though. We'll have to wait to see how these kids develop but just adding players who perform at an average level doesn't really mean much. Outside of those few pitchers whose names we know, the rest of the bunch at the AAA and AA level could be traded for a talent upgrade and I'm pretty sure that I would be ok with it. i enjoy watching the youth movement as much as anybody but at the higher levels I don't see any position players that I would consider to be a can't miss kind of prospect.
  2. Hindsight for sure makes it look like a bonehead trade but there was plenty of justification for it at the time.
  3. Oh i think that he is actually behind all of those guys at this point including Walter but what is the kid 23? He is a big strong left hander. I don't think that he gets counted out just yet.
  4. A 23 year old Jay Groome is going to deserve a look see soon.
  5. Groome and Bello are getting closer and closer.
  6. It was a great day to be a New York Giants fan!!!
  7. I'm not sure what they do or where they plan to go from here to breath some life in to this group but I'm not sure bringing Casas up now will do anything other than give us someone different to look at. We do have some good looking arms in Worcester and Portland but I'm not sure the "Can't miss" sticker has been applied to any of them. A smart move for all would be to sign the very few players who really look like major leaguers that we currently have - Devers, Bogaerts, and Martinez. Without them, I think that JH stands a good chance of seeing a lot more than 10000 fans missing in Fenway on a regular basis.
  8. No question in my mind that they need to keep them both. JH will still be able to put food on the table even if he has to tighten the belt a bit.
  9. I'm with you on this one. I don't get the current strategy. It sucks.
  10. using Whitlock in the closers role would for sure have made them better. Maybe their plan for Whitlock doesn't agree with using him in a relievers role going forward. Looks to me like the plan is to start him.
  11. Oh i don't think that there was any intention to be bad at all. I'm hoping that they thought that they could get by fine with what they had. They made some mistakes. It will be interesting to see whether or not they attempt to fix the mess we are in.
  12. Well maybe i was trying to sugar coat how I really feel. they aren't showing me that they really are that interested in admitting to say nothing of trying to correct their mistakes. We have some strong armed starters right now and any number of them could be pitching at the end of the game if the goal was to win this year. I think that we might be in for a long summer.
  13. A number of you have said for awhile now that this was going to a rebuild year. Not making any extra effort to sign your only true stars seems to indicate that you might be right. If you are, then using Whitlock in a starters role might be what they want to do going forward. The decisions that they have made so far don't show me that the interest in winning this year really matters all that much to them. If it is all about the future then Whitlock should start but so should Houck. If you want your best potential closer in the pen, I don't think that it is Houck. i think that it is Whitlock. if you aren't going to make the decisions that might make us a better team now, bring up the kids.
  14. Actually and somewhat sadly, i think that you have summed it up pretty well.
  15. hey - I'm a big pivetta fan. I couldn't be happier for him. Going forward, my guess, he'll be fine.
  16. Rough start for Groome .
  17. Groome goes for Portland tonight. if he pitches well, how impressive would that staff look?
  18. Since this isn't a political discussion, I am not forced in to taking a side. Compromise is still ok. There is a vast difference between 80 and 140 as well as the obvious 0 to 80. I get your point but making it this way doesn't register well for me. Probably just me. I'm going to go with conditioning and overall fitness still possibly playing a role. it works better for me than simply saying manager stupidity. If I were to hang my hat on the way you have stated things, i guess that I could take this discussion right back to the youth league level where kids who have not reached puberty are actually experiencing TJ surgery. Throwing a ball repetetively for 12 months might just being taking its toll in general. i'm going with if your bullpen is weak, maybe you ought to try to get just that one more inning and maybe 10-15 more pitches out of your starter.
  19. Does kind of make you wonder about fatigue being a factor. Is it possible that some of these guys just tire out? Maybe conditioning plays a role in all of this.
  20. Oh I forgot to say that personally I think that not using a pitcher who is throwing well with a low pitch count simply because you fear what might happen when he sees anybody for the third time, is a sad way to coach. Maybe you watch him carefully but you don't yank hm just because.
  21. You use as much information that is available to help you do the best job that you can do but it seems to me that an extensive use of analytics to defend certain stances makes it look as though they are also being used to provide a crutch when things just don't work. Common sense and coaching means that on occasion you do what you think is the right thing to do. it is possible that a good decision might not be supported by analytics. Paralysis by analysis is a real thing. Houck and Whitlock should be both used as starters at this point or relievers but jerking them around being used as both isn't going to help this situation. They are young guys who need to have clearly defined roles. It is kind of looking as though the real hitters on this team might be our big three - Devers, Bogaerts, and Martinez. If these professional hitters are not going to be in our future, my choice would be to bring up the kids and see what they can do. What we are doing right now appears to be an exercise in colossal failure.
  22. you are right and it is quite obvious.
  23. I don't disagree with you about trying to get too much too soon out of him but 78 doesn't seem to be excessive. I'm thinking at least start the 6th. In general, I see a trend here with Cora.
