  1. Hey now - you know better . No one has ever said that if it can't be measured then it can't exist. At least that is what I have been told. Guys like us probably wouldn't recognize clutch and clutch moments even if they did exist. lol
  2. It is just so hard dealing with the brilliance in general. I think it pretty much is the unspoken implication.
  3. Why oh Why?
  4. Are you saying that because it is not measurable than you do not think that it exists?
  5. This is all well and good. All of these non-political but yet somehow very politcal statements. Turning it back to baseball, we hear very little feedback when it comes to how much professional athletes and entertainers in this country make. We live in the greatest country in the world. Only in America means so much and yer so many different things.
  6. Do you stash that bat in AAA for how long? If he is ready to hit, what do you do?
  7. I have heard this developmental comparison to Varitek before. Am I right in assuming that Varitek was a catcher and for the most part a catcher only. I think that we are talking about a much more versatile player here. I really don't think that anyone in Boston plans on giving him to the age of 30 to develop. Once again, and I truly believe it, I think that there is still a concern as to whether either Vazquez or Leon provide what the Red Sox really want going forward. i really don't think they know. If they were really confident in either Leon or Vazquez, both young men, being our number one going forward, I think that Swihart would either be playing another position or two for us right now or he would have been traded. If his bat is ready, something is going to have to give.
  8. Yes I think that we do but most have suggested that it is going to take some time. I really don't think tucking him away in AAA for 2 or 3 years is going to make any sense at all.
  9. I'm not going to be advocating for not keeping Holt. He has been very valuable to us for sure. that being said, if Hernandez were to replace him and get some substantial time, I think that we would all be pleasantly surprised. I think that he could be a solid player for anybody.
  10. Wow - it is a Red Sox forum board. I guess the assumption is that if we are posting here that there is a pretty good chance that athletics have played a large role in our lives. These experiences don't represent all of my personal best moments but outside of family experiences that did not include athletics ( which most did) they do represent a huge portion of the very times that I have experienced. No one should feel sorry for me. The games including both the ones I watch and the ones I compete in still give a reason to keep on trucking.
  11. I think that Blake Swihart is one hell of an athlete. That being said I doubt very much that he ever catches full time for the Sox. He may get a look but we all know that he has a lot of work to do. The Red Sox don't need to be in a wait mode. He has been dinged around for awhile now so at least it is a good thing I think that they seem committed to leaving him behind the plate. His bat could be race ready early this year. If they can't find a way to use this kid , it would be a shame but in order for him to catch in Boston, he would have to show remarkable improvement in a short period of time. Do people think that this franchise is willing to wait a couple of years for him to develop as an actual catcher if his bat is major league ready? Do they need to? Personally, I wonder what is going through his mind right about now.
  12. absolutely.
  13. Relative to what though?
  14. If you have prepared, and have nerves of steel (so to speak) and ice water (so to speak) in your veins your chances of success are enhanced. Most athletes fail more than they succeed. It is all relative to the game they happen to play.
  15. It is! It is why I still try to compete. I get the fact that golf is different but I still see so many good young players who honestly have such good looking swings but they just haven't figured out how to score. they don't get that it really is about grinding. I really think that it has to do with mental toughness or strength, call it what you like. You can't define it but it exists. I see it almost everyday. The more you live in pressure situations, the more you learn how to deal with it.
  16. Did you choke or come through (in the clutch of course)?
  17. Ain't that the truth. It really is about the preparation.
  18. So would I. But I think that the Red Sox saying that he is going to solely focus on his catching says as much about the confidence they really have in Leon and Vazquez going forward.
  19. He does make some good points. Even better I guess when you agree with them.
  20. No one is saying that you aren't right. If you believe you are, you are. It is not definable - that is what I have heard. Piling on people who truly believe that there are clutch moments and clutch players isn't doing you really any good. We aren't talking about a flat earth here. You are doing a wonderful job convincing yourself though. When you start pulling from the philosophers to prove your point, you might be sounding borderline elitist but who cares right. Honest question - I am beginning to think that you are starting to paint people who believe in such intangible things as "clutch" to be beneath the scope of your intelligence level? In reality, my guess would be that the majority of people who believe things like this do exist are apt to be just as informed and intelligent as the very small group that seems to be trying to drive this stuff down people's throats.
  21. Sam Travis is another good one who has fought the - he is not big enough - he is not fast enough- ... forever. All he has done is hit and hit well wherever he has played. We have seen guys like this before. They just get it done. I hope he is healthy.
  22. I have no problem accepting that these moments of brilliance might be examples of extreme luck. Some athletes though and not always the best statistically seem to be luckier than others.
  23. I think it might matter some who makes up the audience that this evidence is being presented to.
  24. Although I was never a proponent of some of these age old "superstitions", we get to think what we wish. If someone believes strongly enough in something can they make something extraordinary happen? My contention is very likely if they have done all of their homework.
  25. just read this myself. I think that he will be fine. It is what spring training is all about. One thing it does do is gives all the boston writers something to write about. Also, gives us something baseball related to talk about.
