  1. I'm really not jealous of the people who invest their money wisely at all. That is an individual choice. I just have a personal gripe when it comes to how much money people who entertain us are paid. I am all about capitalism but I bet my very good doctor would like to sign just one of those 20 million dollar contracts.
  2. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I came home. We got about 17 down here. We can get out but not much is going on. Stay safe up there.
  3. There is a new commercial that I saw for the first time last night. I think that it was a GE commercial and dealt with the concept of honoring a pioneer female engineer. Someone who actually did something for society that deserves to be honored and paid appropriately for doing. I'm probably not going to listen to anyone from the entertainment industry when I have to decide upon what really is and is not important in the world.
  4. This I agree with.
  5. In all honesty - and with no attempt to be a wise ass - I would like to know what he is worth and how he actually makes his money. I know that he was and maybe still is an investment guy. If he in fact is a multi billionaire, it is very likely that he isn't depending on what is made or lost at fenway park to pay for dinner. One billion invested by someone like him turns in a neat hundreds (s) of millions of dollars per year. More than enough to pay for all franchises and toys that he might have and still have a little left over. I think more importantly is the fact that when and if he decides to ever sell the Red Sox, he will make his big money then. Personally I don't think professional athletes and entertainers in general are worth the kind of money they make to today. The way we treat them says something about our society in general. Don't get me wrong though - I enjoy being entertained and I am glad that the Red Sox are owned by someone with an almost unlimited budget. lol
  6. Hie is a stat guru in training! lol I get to see the stat guru tomorrow - the tax man
  7. I agree. When I use the expression "unlimited budget", I do understand that in most cases there is in fact a budget. Usually I use the expression to just get a little rise out of the folks who want to think that the owners of major franchises - the billionaires amongst us- have to play by normal rules. They don't. I think that they want to win and own successful franchises and it is obvious that most of them are willing to pay out hundreds of millions of dollars to get what they want.
  8. I get the concept of not going over the luxury tax limit because you don't want to lose potential draft picks. I will never understand how paying any of these guys the kind of money the free market seems to demand can conceivably be considered anything but frivolous. Only in America.
  9. I have been playing a lot of golf with some guys from the Toronto area and they were not displeased to see him go. Words like lazy and selfish came up. If there is truth to it, then I get it. That isn't the type of player the Red Sox wanted to take a chance on. For clarification - not me saying it- just repeating what I was told by some Canadian fans.
  10. I think that there might have been a few other concerns that were more important to the franchise when considering the resigning of Buchholz and potentially signing EE. Maybe they just didn't fit in well with the direction ownership wanted this team to go.
  11. I do agree with you with respect to the leverage to draft future players. That makes sense. The loss of revenue through the payment of salaries to a multi billionaire means 0. If this team has budget constraints it would seem that it could have something to do with not losing future drafting power. Being fiscally responsible with respect to salaries paid? Nope - not buying that one for one second.
  12. high above the gahhhdin floor sat Johnny. I listened to almost every game he broadcasted back in the mid 60's. I hope Jerry Remy gets through this with flying colors. Although I have always enjoyed listening to him, I enjoyed watching him play even more.
  13. I get what you are doing here and it is great information. The one thing missing is how many billions John Henry is worth. You might be worth a billion or so too, I don't know. If John Henry continues to really want to own this franchise, personally I won't worry at all about the size of our payroll. Before I start getting the stuff about the Red Sox budget (which no one here really knows much about)and what the ramifications are of going over the luxury tax, consider how much a multi billionaire can afford - if in fact that is what he is worth. He doesn't have to worry too much about paying his cable bill if you get my drift.
  14. eventually they will
  15. As do I but there are others who can't afford to pay it at all.
  16. Everything is relative. Nobody likes to throw their money away but John Henry paying Sandoval's salary can be compared to me paying my cable bill.
  17. even better for us - I don't think that John Henry is worrying about it too much either.
  18. Obviously I don't know anything about there injuries but it did seem to me that in Wright's case particularly, if it wasn't serious enough for some kind of procedure (unless I missed something), he should have healed up. They are both young men.
  19. Some will for sure. I was surprised to hear that Wright isn't ready. I wonder what Vazquez, Travis, Swihart, Leon, and Sandoval would say to anyone who doesn't think that spring training can be a time for some real competition for roster spots. Interesting to see how this all shakes out.
  20. I really do agree with the way you see this. i know more about what we look like years from now than I ever did before. Quite honestly it used to be a couple of years at a time at best for me. I used to have other things to occupy my time - family and job for the most part. Being retired gives me more time to worry about our Red Sox 5 years from now. Not sure that is a good thing for me. When I was teaching and coaching there is virtually no way I would have been able to participate on a forum board. Either I was too busy or just not that bright. I like this and have learned a lot but the information age still has it s drawbacks. Keep pn keepin on!
  21. Pretty sure it is that "other" forum board
  22. I think that that is reasonable. i do think though like any piece of information regardless of how important they can be, they don't always tell a complete story.
  23. I was just kidding. I think that I know what BDC is.
  24. I'm not the one doing the suggesting. Do really think that there are people here who aren't concerned about the future of this franchise? If I don't agree with your approach, it does not mean that I don't care as much about the direction the team is going in as you do. While I do not think that our farm system is the best in baseball right now, I do not think that we are in horrible shape either. At the same time, I think that our major league club is improved.
  25. Easy - no one is denying that our future might not be impacted by the trading of prospects. It very well might be but it might very be a positive impact. I'm pretty sure that you will take this to mean that I am all excited about getting rid of our prospects. That could not be further from the truth. I believe that for the most part you get what you pay for and on occasion you have to take some risks in life. I tend to believe that DD knows exactly what he is doing and that he is also concerned about the future of the team. But once again I will add that I have no particular loyalties toward anyone involved with Red Sox management-past or present.
