Maybe I'm stupid. I know what peripheral and superficial mean. i've actually used the words myself. What Moncada has done at the minor league level is in fact what he did. 0 superficial about it. He is not doing too badly recently either. He still projects as a potential all-star. it is not fair to compare him with Benintendi for sure. It looks as though Benintendi was ahead of him in terms of development as he should have been. I'm as happy as hell that we have Sale but that in no way diminishes the impact that this young man may have someday. that being said, I wish that we had a few players currently on our team that at least as physically impressive as Moncada does.

With respect to keeping Devers over Moncada, i don't think that they were really looking that far ahead. Substitute Devers for Moncada and I'm pretty sure Sale does not come to Boston. No one really had a thought of Devers potentially being in Boston this summer.

Let me just say again as I have said before. - he is going to be good but he ain't no Freddie lynn. Anyone who thinks that there really is any comparison never saw Lynn play. it is possible i suppose that people have just forgotten how big and how smooth he really was. Beni is his own guy and i hope that he has a wonderful career but really is there another Fred Lynn that I don't know about? if you want to just state a stat line fine i guess.

Sounds like it goes against your overall philosophy. i think that flexibility is very important when you are building a team as well. i don't think that there is any one right way to do it. Kimbrel for Margot and fillers I think still looks pretty good.

Too many people are using our third base problems as "the problem" that if solved everything would be just great. It is a big problem but it sure isn't the only one. In general, the defense has been poor, base running pathetic, and the hitting for the most part non-existent. They might be playing at their appropriate level which is just one tads worth better than .500.

i don't feel as though the deal for Kimbrel alone stripped the farm of anything of great significance. I think that you are right that that is how some people look at it though. Depth is of course important, but it looks great in hindsight. The way I look at this particular deal is that we have a closer who every team in baseball would love to have. It is kind of too bad that he is playing for such an overrated bunch.

Could be for sure. Get Smith and Thornburg back and the bullpen looks good too. They still will have to hit some as well. i'm just not as convinced as some that this offense will be fine with time. I'm all out of Moreland love and I am not sure what Hanley's gig is. What I see right now are a lot of potentially good hitters with really not a lot of pop. I like some real game changing pop in the lineup.

What worries me just a little is that I fully understand that you cannot win a pennant in April or May but you sure as the devil can dig a whole too big to crawl out of. They need to get series wins over the teams that they should beat. it is a marathon for sure but you just can't ho hum losses at this time of year either. i like the fact that Kimbrel is being brought in when he should be brought in.

Farrell is a manger not a leader right. This team in general has been overrated particularly from an offensive standpoint.

For the record: I have been a big supporter of Pomeranz and still think that he has value for us. A lot more than Espinoza. What I would add though is that I don't think that he will ever be what I was hoping that he would be. I do not think that he is "gritty" enough,"tough" enough, or actually "mean" enough to be a great pitcher. Athletes know what those words actually mean. I liked how Kevin McHale described Danny Ainge's approach to things.

I think that you are right overall although everybody just jumps out of their shorts with every lineup change and the possibility of one happening.

I really think SoxHop that it is very much about repetition of things, the little things, that lead to the big things. All players at all levels want to be coached. What you emphasize and talk about in practice and if you have high expectations then if the talent is there stuff gets done. All good coaches have ways of getting the most out of the players they work with. I'm not sure that there is any one best way. You find something that works and you stick with it but more often than not it comes right down to doing correctly what you work on the most. If situational baseball is what you have been working on and things still continue to look bad, then maybe you are not demanding enough or your players just can't do what you expect of them. i have no idea what jF works on or how he goes about his business. I think that we assume that since they operate at the highest level then they must work on every component that has to be worked on. If that is the case, then maybe we overrate our guys. On the other hand, if they don't work on all of the little things that need to be worked on because they assume that because someone else must have taught them what they need to do already, they just aren't a very good staff. i tend to think that jF could be a little more demanding but I would bet that they work on everything that needs working on and that we (me) might overrate the overall ability of our guys just a bit.

About the time I start thinking that Sandy Leon has reverted to the old days of good glove no stick, look what he does. You never know with these guys.
