Of course it is good offense but it is not the type of offense that produces many runs. The guys doing the hitting for the most part are plate setters. A balance is needed greatly. A lot of good little hitters for sure. We don't really need many more good little hitters though.

10 hits - 2 runs - 20 runners left on base. In the words of Chris Sale - at the end of the day for a pitcher the only stat the has meaning is a pitcher's win loss record. Makes me a member of his fan club. Statistics are fun for people to crunch and play with but just win the game. We have a few very good little hitters but someone forgot the need to have real run producers.

I really would be surprised if that happens. I think that they will go after Heyward or someone else out there like him and then trade from what they have right now to pick up a good solid young guy (if they can lock him up) maybe Butler. i think that they are likely to keep that top pick but the fact remains that there are too many guards on this team. in terms of being more competitive next year, yes I think they can be. Once again - top 4 in the league. But when it comes to winning the title, sadly as long as Lebron is around, good luck with that.

i'm with you here for the most part. We all loved David in his role as a player and leader of the Red Sox. Sometimes it isn't a bad thing to stay in the roles that you are good at. I don't remember anyone questioning J.D. Drew's ability. We just want him to be on the field a little more than he was. Once again - a person needs to have a grasp of his/her limitations. -
Fenway might be one of those acquired tastes people sometimes talk about.

Batting him in the cleanup spot is ridiculous. Traditionally it is a position reserved for power bats from whom homers and lots of rbi's are expected from. The avalanche might start of how batting order doesn't make a difference and what the perfect placement might be for all of our hitters but the fact remains - players tend to be traditional. This kid worked hard to put on what maybe 10 pounds of muscle during the off season. He is going to hit and maybe for some power but batting him 4th in your lineup is placing some performance expectations on him that he just might not be ready to produce. he is a good hitter who is going to hit better. Don't try to make him out to be something he may never be.

when lynn was healthy and playing at full speed there were very few if any players that compared to him. looking at his career as a whole and averaging out what he accomplished might to some make him look like a player who was just a little bit better than good. For those of us who saw this guy play, i hope the tendency is to focus on what he did over the course of his healthy seasons when he played for us. i'm trying to think who i would place ahead of him historically in center field for us. guess i can't come up with anybody. Not close. He gets the nod. In my mind's memory, I can still see him out there. he just glided - it really didn't look like running. Swinging the bat for him looked just as effortless. his rhythm and timing were both incredible. He had a PGA tour swing at the plate. The beauty of it was that he was accompanied by other great players on those mid 1970's teams as well.

i bet I would have like your Dad. i thought that in 1975, Rice was going to win one of those awards and i will forever think that with him in our lineup in 1975 we would have beaten the Reds. watching those two play together in the same lineup during that 75 season was incredible. rice was literally all power with and emphasis on the word power. lynn was one of the smoothest bigger players that i have ever seen. rice = effort and power - lynn = silk like smooth

i'm really ok with this. it really has to do with our opinions and of course in my case, my memory. i think that Beni is going to be fine and productive going forward. i just don't see how anyone can really compare him to Fred Lynn. both outfielders - yes for sure. i watched Freddie for the years he was with us. i like Beni but really comparing him to Lynn? whatever floats your boat I guess.

yaz - easy for me. i remember him when he made it to the big club. Obviously, his 1967 year had a deep impact on me. i used to carry a radio with me so i could listen to the day games regardless of where i was. it was an unprecedented year for all of us living where i lived. something we just weren't used to i guess. A young team led by a left fielder who just did things that we had not seen before. As the years progressed, so did he. i don't know where people place captain Carl with respect to their personal greatest evers but for me it really is kind of easy. you can't compare eras i get that. Ted Williams will continue to be the greatest hitter that really I have ever seen - David Ortiz (don't need to say anything about what he meant to us all) - but yup - Yaz - for me there is and probably never will be a question. In all honesty, maybe it is due primarily to what he did during that 67 season. So be it - I'm happy that I was alive to see it. thank you for asking and being interested. i love threads like this.

if Ben had us here to help him ( not all of us because believe or not some of us really didn't like him) we would just be f---ing fantastic by now. It's History!

you sign who you want to sign - Fultz ok . You sign Heyward - you trade for who you really want. right now it is pretty obvious that as long as you have just one ball to play with that the c's are heading toward guard heavy haven. That is where the trade comes from and that will be a tough call. If it was me, as much as i like Bradley, he might be the odd guy out. some say smart but I like his toughness and his real potential as a defensive player. They will be close but thinking that any 19 or 20 year od kid is going to step on to the court and be an immediate impact player on this team might be a dream unless he is 6'7" plus can defend, pass, and stick it from beyond the arc. A few other thoughts though - We have a tough assed GM and one of the better coaches in all of bb land. Plus, don't forget about a couple of international draft picks that were made last year. We are in for a decades worth of very good celtic's bb.

I'm working from memory obviously but I absolutely believe that big people help little people win games more than the other way around. i'm one of the little guys also. I truly hope that you and all others are right about Benintendi. I like him too and hope that he becomes the best ever. As for now - it's Fred Lynn for me - 0 comparison.

i doubt that very much. I hope that you are right but I will just say it again - Freddie Lynn he ain't. he may in fact put those numbers up on occasion but if he did it on a regular basis i would be pleasantly stunned.

My grandfather was a very very good player back in the 20's and 30's when towns had teams - very good teams. Pomfret CT. my family moved to Maine in the 40's and my Mom stuck a Sox hat on my head in 1955 - I was 4- Red Sox for lifer. We spent our summers in Ct. where my Aunt (Hebron Ct.) and Grandparents attempted to civilize us. My first and only trip to Fenway until the 70's came in 1960. I did get to see Ted play. My most cherished memories are of listening to afternoon games with my Gramps on summer afternoons in the barn before he went out to do the chores. Life was really a lot simpler then and maybe even better.

Benintendi will be a nice little player for our team. He is going to hit . I do not think though that going forward his is going to give us what it looks like we need the most - power. He is cut from the mold of most of the current players that we have - potentially very good hitters just not power hitters.

Since i saw Pomeranz pitch against Detroit last summer, i have tried hard to support him. After I saw him in an interview last week, not so much. if he was really any good, we might see a little fire and a little of "I'm pissed of at the way i have been pitching" attitude out of him. i haven't seen it. he's been cut. His card should have a picture of Owens on the back of it.

With Travis heating up and Devers continuing to pound the ball, i'm ready for them both. Moreland looks more and more like a good option coming off the bench - a damn slow one but still an option. If we are going to struggle to score runs anyway, i would much prefer to see it be with a youth movement.

Now that is the kicker isn't it. Without Kimbrel we would suck even worse but if you are going to be a .500 team does it make any difference whether we have him or not? if we are or were going to be any good, it does for sure. It would look like a great deal. If we are going to just suck, then what the hell it would be better to suck and still have all or our prspects and maybe even another draft pick that we could potentially screw up. lol

Olynkyk was an offensive star last night for sure. he does have some amazing offensive skils. He is a definite defensive liability for sure though. i like Smart. He is tougher than hell and can guard just about anyone. Actually Crowder and Smart are players that most teams would love to have. The best have players like Beal, who if you have any kind of lapse on the defensive end they will score. The Celtics are still a ways away from being the best but they are heading in that direction.

too many 3 balls fired and too many turnovers for me but i'm watching. i do like the intensity and the physicality the Celtics have. not enough to beat the Cavs but to be one of the last 4 standing is a good thing.

i just cannot help but think what our current situation might look like without the acquisitions made by DD. What he has done is of course debatable but having a farm system loaded with players that might not ever be significant ml ready guys, as opposed to having the Sales and Kimbrels, would not make me happy. Some of his moves of course look questionable right now primarily because some of them look like damaged goods. One of my concerns is that not one of our younger players who were here when DD arrived seem to show one lick of the leadership skills that we need right now. Betts ? maybe - the rest not so much. It is a piece of the puzzle that is lacking. People can question the significance of good leadership to i guess. I don't.
