  1. But Moon after carefully scrutinizing what Ben accomplished, what does that say about Theo and his recommendation? Maybe he didn't want to face us in the World Series anytime soon. lol-lol- just a little joke all of you Theo lovers. Got nothing better to do.
  2. I think that it is more likely that he is an above average hitter and quite possibly a below average fielder for a while at least. Since we already have a few of those guys, I see him fitting in quite well. Not sure he ever develops into the catcher that people at one time thought he could but he is certainly athlete enough to field the huge hole (lol) left by Brock Holt if someone thinks that it is time to change. I'm not sure that I ever saw him catch a game that I said after what a good catcher he was. Never saw it. Just constantly heard potential potential. The but is that he is one helluva an athlete who I think makes this roster in a make it or break it year for him.
  3. Anyone might have been an excellent value in those two years. If memory serves, we were really bad- really. I'm not suggesting that Holt had much to do with this but his greatest achievement during those two years may have been simply to keep fan interest. He was a curiosity - How many different positions can a guy play? Having him not on the 25 man to start the season might really be the best decision. We pretty much know what he has to give us. I'm not impressed.
  4. Anyone who can suggest that they have any clue about what Swihart is capable of as a hitter moving forward, surely doesn't have a Red Sox perspective. He is clearly an above average athlete. I'm thinking that it is more likely that he is an outstanding hitter as opposed to a below average or average hitter. If someone was to tell me that that he was going to be our starting 2nd baseman or 3rd baseman to begin the season, I could live with it from a defensive perspective. I'm not sure that that would be much of a downgrade. Before anyone comes unglued or feels the urge to wordsmith, that is not what I am suggesting. I am suggesting that he will be a far better than average hitter.
  5. that's what I thought
  6. Interesting article on the mlb rumors website this morning. Seems that the Sox have been trying to sign some veteran arms to stash down in Pawtucket. This doesn't surprise me at all. It just is not that easy. Many of these tired old potential has beens do not want to pitch at the AAA level if they can absolutely help it. Points out the fact that DD isn't just sitting around doing nothing. Maybe something will break and maybe it won't as we get closer to the end of sp. Makes me really appreciate the signing of Tommy Layne even more. He knows where he is going and can live with it to continue the dream.
  7. They needed him. It was necessary to get that bat in the lineup. Most young players who get the call are in fact still developing. Holding him back I think hoping that his fielding would improve would have been a waste of time for both him and the organization. He really is quite athletic. He should come along. If you kept all of your youngsters back until they were fully cooked ai'm afraid that your teams would suffer on many occasions. It is possible that given time to grow into things that he becomes outstanding in all phases of the game.
  8. I think that trying to use Lin in any outfield position is a mistake. We have no clue as to what his upside might be. I certainly do not think that he is ready to be on the 25 man roster at this time. The guy is an infielder - second base/shortsop. Too much of this dinking around with kids that really could be ml someday is foolish.
  9. I'm pulling hard for Johnson after everything that he has had to deal with. I think that it would be very hard to find an affordable sp right now that would give us much more than he can.
  10. I agree that he has to have a long leash with plenty of room to grow but his defense needs to grow or we better score one pant load of runs. Ultimately I think that he gets there, but based on what we tend to see from posters here, he won't be cut much slack if he is good for an error a game. Might have to just hold your nose for a while be patient and wait until he gets to the plate.
  11. I've pretty much felt this way with respect to the bench all along. i'm with you here.
  12. This I for one could easily live with. Other than being able to sort of play most positions on the field what does he give us? I don't think that his defense at any of the positions he plays makes him a real viable defensive replacement. Marrero would be my choice. He plays 3 infield positions well enough to make us better later in games when we might not need anything but defense. Glad I don't have to make these choices.
  13. I would like to think and I do that incidents like have been mentioned are the types of incidents that a manager has to deal with. If the GM has to step in to solve these types of problems, they hired the wrong guy to mange the team. As happened with both Valentine and Farrell not being able to handle these types of situations ultimately cost them both their jobs. If I were Cora, even though he has been referred to here as a player's coach, I hope that he is damned careful with the players he has to deal with. Pedroia is a good tough little player when healthy, but I would be very careful with how I handled him after what we saw last year.
  14. Now back to spring training - I get the fact that most people don't place much importance on much that is done in spring training but when it comes to defense I think that you can learn a lot in spring training and right now without Pedroia in the lineup early our overall defense in the infield looks a lot like that of some of the teams I grew up with in the mid 60's. Other than Malzone at third, they were terrible. I really don't see Swihart catching for this team. It would not be worth the risk using him at all in a position that you can overlook the offense if the defense is outstanding. Ours right now is pretty good. I will say though that I would definitely keep this kid. I don't think that he could be any worse at any other infield position than we have there right now.
  15. It's fine. You sound like a nice person and I certainly am too sensitive. More often than not, I'm a fan of whoever the current GM might be. From a personal perspective, I think that all of the talk be it criticism or praise that has been lobbed back and for at both BC and DD is foolish. Much of it has been lobbed with a heavy dose of hind sight. Ben has been praised here for building a strong farm and for his overall philosophy. If I were to make a comment on that, it would just be formulated on educated guess work. I don't know either of them nor do I really know what their philosophies are. When it comes to GMs in general, I try to stay in the present and I will say for sure that I do like the job that DD has done. He seems intelligent, respected and aggressive. Traits I like. I'm pretty sure that someone will try to turn what I have said into a criticism of Ben Cherington. It isn't. My comments are about DD. thanks for clearing things up
  16. My comment was in response to the above statement made by you. I got the impression from what you wrote that you were kind of saying that I would never criticize a GM. Sorry you didn't understand what I wrote in my post.
  17. Couple of things - I really hope Devers can field that position . Right now not so much. I'm pulling for him. Come on kid. If we keep Sandy Leon, he will give us a better backup behind the plate than most other teams. Say what you will the man can catch. Much as I like Swihart it's going to take him a long time to get to Sandy's level as a backstop if he ever can. Sandy may even push Vazquez. It will depend on how each hits I think. Two solid catchers.
  18. Oh man Slasher good to hear from you. I know that you didn't like the Price deal but you have to admit that deal for Pomeranz sure was a beauty. Just fooling with you.
  19. Well you know what yes I have heard of Bill Belicek. For your record , I do not think that comparing DD to BB makes any sense whatsoever. A ml stretch if you will. I can tell you with great confidence that WITHOUT KNOWING ALL OF THE FACTS I would not question the person many have said is the greatest NFL coach of all time. Obviously there are plenty of people out there who are going to question everything about everything without sadly knowing anything. Oh and if you wren't comparing DD to BB, sorry I just did what you and a few others like to do. Shape other's words to suit me.
  20. I think that that is fine. I am just not sure that I rally know what the current team building philosophies are of either of these two guys.
  21. notin - seriously are you ok? I can't read much of what you have written. Obviously whatever it is it must be right I guess. I don't consider what I have said about Cherington mocking at all. In my opinion, I do not think that he was ready to lead our franchise. Now though since you brought it up, I would not criticize an acting GM of the Red Sox on this site. It is not my style. I never have nor will I. I won't question the moves made by people who have a job that I really Know nothing about. Word twisting again too tut tut. If you think that it is safe to assume based on anything that I have written that I consider myself to be a better baseball mind then Cherington, maybe it is you who needs to check the comprehension skills. Oh yeah - you have also told me that I could not understand what you have written and you are right.
  22. Do you really think that there is a human alive who would not criticize a GM for what they think is a bad decision. Once again just word play. Believe me I will criticize him when I think that he makes a truly bad decision. To date, I don't think that he has.
  23. First of all notin I kind of missed what you wrote at the end. I don't have blind faith in anyone other than immediate family members. You have a way of trying to twist the of words others for sure. I don't very often agree with you and I like the job that our GM is doing. I've told you this before as well - I will never judge our team decisions by what any other franchise does. I could care less. You are in panic mode nearing hysteria because we haven't as yet signed some over that hill dumpster dog to save the day. Just a little faith notin - you want to call it blind fine.
  24. I've said this many times. Giving any one individual credit for all draft picks whether they are good or bad makes no sense to me. You get good people to do that job for you. That is what leadership is all about. I'm not going to give one person all that much credit for building a farm system. It takes a team of talent.
