Money is definitely the motivator but in the event that there is competition for a player the chance to play on a team with better players and commitment to the future is a big deal.

This is a tough one for me to say but outside of the possibility of a delivery of a boatload of money, what else might attract any premier free agent to Boston. If winning now matters to any of these guys, I don't see what the Red Sox have done to improve their stock.
I'm wondering what the intricacies of this strategy might be. Sign a whole heap of marginal to average players coupled with bunches of reclamation projects and hold on to every minor leaguer who has shown any sign of actually being a prospect.
Not to worry .. At some point in time when his play is limited and there is no way that he should actually be playing, the Sox will swing a deal for him and all will be forgiven and forgotten. Maybe he'll even wear a Red Sox hat when being inducted into the HOF.
Wanting to win and doing what it takes to win as you know are two very dramatically different concepts. Henry in the past not only has wanted to win but he has financed the efforts that enabled his team to win. Personally, I'm a fan and have been since 1955. I don't really feel entitled to anything - lifes been good. Also, I do not care at all about how fans of other teams might feel. And yes I do understand the points that you have been making. Have to say, I have been missing a time when this franchise stood at the top of the food chain. It's still a little early to abandon all hope for sure but I'll be watching reruns of the "Big Bang theory" when the games begin if there isn't just a little more life breathed in to this franchise going forward. That doesn't mean I'm abandoning my fan card, it just means that I don't find them particularly entertaining to watch.
hmm - I think that the Story signing looked pretty good at the time. It just hasn't worked out. As for Yoshi, that just doesn't look like a great signing. Not horrible by any measure but not great. As for Devers - Oh what the hell, we all love Devers. I just wish that he was a better fielder.
I don't see myself as a victim at all. I see you as someone who is constantly looking not simply for an answer to a question but trying to find ways to embarrass someone for viewpoints that they might have. I think that I have a pretty good grip on where you tend to come from. If you want to ask me questions here without the snippets of clever little inuendo you are known for, that would be fine. If not so be it.
I had a nice response for you notin but I had to delete it. Safe to say that even if we happened to agree about anything, we likely would never be on the same page...
You do know how to pick and choose the parts of sentences that you wish to respond to don't you notin. It's a queer little trick we see daily in the world of politics but some do it better than others. I have not one clue what it means for a billionaire to spend his money wisely nor do i care how he spends it. If you are a multi billionaire trying to not just exist but actually win in a professional athletic environment, then i guess you better be willing to spend. Now before you jump all over that one, let me say that I do care about how jh spends his money as in I want him to spend it. I don't want him to spend it on players in free agency that might be slightly better than average. Since i do not happen to think that multi billionaires are particularly restricted by budgetary constraints, maybe i should have said that jh should be looking for maximum bang for his buck. That's all i got for you notin. Sorry if it doesn't meet the high standards of this forum that you would like to see.
I would not have been happy signing any single player to that type of contract but what alternative is really in play for us? The right targets need to be clearly determined and then the money needs to be paid. In recent years, I don't think that our larger contracts that have been paid out really have been all that great. Like everyone else, I'm anxious to see what happens going forward.
I would love to watch a team with Yamo,Monty, Lugo, Duval, and Merrifield as well. Wouldn't that be a great way for JH to spend his money. In reality though, based on what we have seen, what are the chances?
Maybe other teams aren't as up on the prospects that we apparently have developed over the past few years. Is it possible that they collectively just aren't as good as advertised?
It looks to me as though some of the wealthiest owners are more interested in winning than in spending sleepless nights in worry about budgetary constraints. It is nice when someone finds the classic "diamond in the rough" but in general you win with better players and sometimes as we have seen you have to pay for them. I understand that the Red Sox do in fact spend but I'm beginning to wonder if they are spending their money wisely.
So Verdugo is gone because of the primary reason that he and Cora just weren't seeing eye to eye. I get that . The return for us was pretty puny so we are probably pretty sure that he was shipped out just because.
Now we have hired Tip O'neil essentially to take his place. Tell me please that this franchise is going to start to try to play with the big boys again. Oh i know - i'm just one of those spoiled whiny fans but have to say that most of what we have done recently is embarrassing for me anyway. Is this who we are now?
We have for sure a farm system that has many more young players that come with the "good potential" tag hanging off them then we have seen in some time. We are going to learn a lot in the upcoming weeks what our front office and other front offices think of this untested talent. Either significant trades for actual major league talent will be made or we get to see if all of our hopefuls really are as good as advertised. Breslows moves however minor they might be to date, i kind of like. I think that he knows the types of players he wants and we need. Going to be interesting.
zzzzz... ho hum - Breslow has added some power arms. Maybe a few will become something other than prospects. At the present, I don't see any reason to even be looking forward to next season. I guess maybe we will find out once and for all whether the state of our farm system is any good in reality or not. It is early and it would seem that moves have to be made in order for us to be anything more than what we had last year. Idk - Maybe he hasn't had to field many calls asking about possible trades from our own system because most people don't see their awesome potential in trade.
It said to me that he had a far better chance of being in Boston as opposed to Worcester. Guess it just depends on the way you interpret what some writers write. Maybe even what players you like as well.
