I really do hope that most baseball fans realize the importance of looking at an athlete's production from as many directions as possible.

In the case of a pitcher with this profile, the wins would take care of themselves. But for arguments sake, i'm pretty sure that two of our more voluminous posters can dig up pitchers with stat lines similar to what I have mentioned, who just couldn't seem to get the wins.lol

If they both have good years, who would you rather have playing for you?

It's arguments like this that actually make looking any stat in combination with others as being significant. I like pitchers who win a lot of games and have low earned run averages to go along with lots of innings pitched with any type of fastball that is 94mph +. Does that make me just another old schooler who doesn't get it?

One "realistic view" for this season is that Chris Sale is pitching for someone else. When he hits 97 with that fastball, he is unhittable. I hope very much that he can stay healthy because when he is healthy, he is one of the best ever. I don't care what uniform he wears. I just want to watch him pitch.

If John Henry put this team up for sale, which I doubt he does but you never know, it will make no difference what the pitching landscape looks like. His team would sell as quickly as property in Florida has been selling. Here today gone tomorrow.

I agree that the "potential" to be a better defensive team than last year does exist.

i get the attempt to be at least a little optimistic, but I'm not buying that the defense looks significantly better at the outset. The only upgrade for certain will be at short if he can stay on the field.

The defense this year may at some point prove to better than what we saw last year but I'd be very surprised if it becomes what we think of as good. If Story stays healthy, it should at least be better at short. We all hope that it will be better for sure. Kind of a low bar to hope over when you think of last year.

Duran's name as well as others has been mentioned in trade talks since last year. I want them to keep him and if that means putting him in centerfield then so be it. He could become an outstanding asset. With the way this team is constructed presently, his centerfield defense or lack thereof isn't going to be a big deal over the long haul. You need to be strong up the middle for sure but in advocating for an unknown possibly ok and possibly not young second baseman and a catching staff that may or may not be adequate tells me that yup I'm keeping Duran and playing him.

I'm a Mainer and I have a friend down here in Florida (you know that place that some here would never live of which I'm ok with) who thinks that Maine is in fact part of Canada. I have a few good friends down here who are Canadian. They all played hockey and i'm pretty sure that I would like to have them on my side at all times.

Clearly bringing Theo back creates a buzz that excites Red Sox fans. I wish that he could pitch but oh well. It's nice I guess that JH now has managed to bring some wealthy well knowners into the fold of management I guess but I guess I'll wait to see how it translates to the team that we yard out in the spring. So far, I'm not excited by this move at all. Hope it amounts to something.

Adequate behind the plate and a huge question mark at second base makes us a big so so with respect to up the middle defense and it doesn't matter whether they have a gold glover in center field.

I would like to see him healthy and playing everyday. At least then we would know what we have.

If the Red Sox are not going to make any substantial moves to better the team, why keep anybody that might bring in decent prospects. Why continue to pay one of the top closers in the league if he is surrounded by a team that isn't going anywhere. Now with respect to Duran - he is a prospect with possibly some incredible potential. The type that changes games. You don't give up on those guys until you are pretty sure of what you have.

ownership thinks that the "Fenway experience" will continue to put rumps in the seats. It's not about the product on the field anymore. hey hopefully a whole new generation of first and last time fans go to enjoy the antique experience for at least a day if they can afford it.

...and just like that this post makes sense even to me. Doesn't make me feel much better or even confident that any of those things might happen but certainly is a sensible approach to a pretty bleak picture.

tragedy? really? what the Red Sox choose to do or not do is somewhat shy of a tragedy. Their choosing to not sign players that they desperately need if in fact they have the money is just stupid not tragic. Maybe they don't have the money that we think they do. If that's the case I'll tip my hat to their worthy efforts to make us competitive to date. Pedro talked about the culture that once defined the Boston Red Sox. It's gone. Sadly gone.

Many of us have been running up the white flag for awhile now. Anything is better than nothing. Not signing anyone who is remotely serviceable such as Paxton just seems like a continuation of a nothingness campaign. I'll take it all back if a signing or two takes place to sort of indicate that they really do give a s*** about this year's team. Sadly, and I freely admit, I really am losing interest in them daily. I hardly know the names of these guys anymore.

Thankfully for him that it's all about the money i guess right. That's a sarcastic little snarky, Eddie from LB comment for those wondering. Any of these guys who can play just a little bit have to be wondering just like us what the hell is going on here. Trade these guys and give them a chance to win. Upper management can then start promoting the idea of a real youth rebuild.
