  1. There seems to have been a bit of confusion over whether JDM has another opt-out at the end of this year. There's a story in the Globe today confirming that he does have an opt-out.
  2. Sorry, but I can't let this one slide. You call the 37 innings in 2021 a "small sample", but the 23 innings in 2020 a "forgettable season".
  3. Yes, our starting pitchers have put us in a lot of holes.
  4. It doesn't always do that. In 2018 they were 25-14 in one run games.
  5. The Yankees cheated and moved LeMahieu there for some games.
  6. I think the Yankees have the worst overall output at first base. A joint effort by Voit, Ford and Bruce, none of whom have 250 PA...
  7. Overall, they were a little suppressed. And most pitchers seemed to sign one-year deals. But after the deals Tatis and Lindor got, it sure seems like happy days are here again.
  8. And Barnes's OPS+ would be even better, as Fenway has a Park Factor of 109 this year and 107 multi-year (no idea what time frame multi-year covers).
  9. OPS against would probably be better.
  10. Bloom didn't have much payroll room to work with and Dalbec is a minimum wage player, so it made sense from that perspective. We could have signed Mitch Moreland again, but he's not doing that great either - although if the A's are willing to trade him for not much, that might not be a bad idea.
  11. Kimbrel may be a prima donna, but his career numbers are MUCH better than Barnes's. There's no real comparison.
  12. In 2019 Barnes had an ERA of 3.78, which translated to an ERA+ of 129, which is pretty good.
  13. The whole thing has gotten better than expected. Kind of a pleasant surprise, really.
  14. Yes, he's a pretty good comp. Recency Effect not in his favor. Maybe I should have said "would be the reliever most likely to get the biggest contract".
  15. True. But the number of games between now and July 31 is pretty small compared to the number of games between now and the end of the season and the postseason. A lot of these deadline deals are not so much urgent needs as bolstering weaker areas.
  16. Is it all a media concoction? I don't know about that. I think history shows that most deals in July don't get done until close to the end.
  17. I think he would have gotten 3 years guaranteed for sure. If Liam Hendriks gets 4/54, Barnes has to get 3/36 or thereabouts. Assuming he continues to pitch well this year. He would be the best reliever on the free agent market.
  18. All it takes is one team though. Liam Hendriks's stat sheet didn't really merit 54 million, either.
  19. Who knew that cheating accusations could be so much fun, huh? One odd thing I've noticed is that whenever Aaron Judge does something to troll an opponent, it backfires.
  20. STORK sighting. There's one about every 6 months.
  21. The Astros scored 2 runs in first 26 innings of the series, and 6 runs in the 27th. That's baseball, baby! Crazy freakin' game.
  22. Even if you value Barnes at 75% of Hendriks, that's about 3 years and 40 million, which I think is a fair estimate.
  23. As you know, the differences in bWAR are much smaller. fWAR reliews heavily on FIP. If GM's valued fWAR as much as you seem to be suggesting, Rick Porcello would be in a major league uniform this year. after turning in a 1.7 fWAR in 59 innings last year.
  24. What's wrong with Hendriks as a comp? Looks like a pretty solid one to me.
  25. It's a valid question. I think you could say Cora was 'playing it halfway'. He was willing to use several of his better relievers to chase a comeback win, but didn't want to burn all of them. He wanted to hold back Ottavino and Barnes for today's game.
