  1. Yes, for most of this century the Red Sox have been near the top in payroll and always hovering around the tax line, except for 2018 and 2019 when they went over by a lot. Henry's ownership has been about everything you could ask for.
  2. It has all worked out amazingly well, IMO. Bloom was the perfect guy to step into a situation like this. I'm a big fan of him, even though I was disappointed by the deadline inactivity. He probably did all the right things at the deadline too.
  3. The fact that the Red Sox went all in for 2018-2019 and then decided to re-set has everything to do with the budget issues. You can chalk it up to ownership more so than DD. It was the strategy they chose.
  4. Great work by Whitlock.
  5. The decision not to go over this year was obviously a very calculated one based on the assumption that this year was not the one to go all-in. Most of us figured the team at 85 wins or so. But who knows, if they had seen in the crystal ball that we'd be in first place on July 31, they might have spent more this offseason.
  6. Something that gets overlooked about DD is that he's the guy who hired Cora. That was a huge plus for the future of the team in itself.
  7. And for his efforts he got a pink slip!
  8. OK, well, that term "the cliff", which was used here countless times, is definitely one reason people push back. "The cliff" sounded like 3-4 years of bad teams/rebuilding. It sounded like Jax's wet dream. In reality, it was one pandemic-shortened season.
  9. And with Whitlock, it was reported that a former Sox scout named Bob Hamelin was the one who did all the legwork and advocacy for taking him if at all possible.
  10. A sensitive DD worshiper might argue that he recognized that a lot of our highly rated prospects were overrated. Farm rankings are not gospel truth, and I would hope the people who run the teams are a little bit better judges than the people who make those rankings.
  11. Has any of the statmeisters actually stated as a straight-out fact that clutch and choke don't exist? Or have they said it can't be proved that they exist? I can't accept the idea that they have proved it doesn't exist. Generally speaking you cannot prove a negative.
  12. No, we don't throw any real MLB numbers out the window, thanks.
  13. Losing streaks make everybody look bad. Including us.
  14. What is the evidence that they're true, though?
  15. That's completely anecdotal too, Kimmi.
  16. And it adds up to a 775 OPS and 104 OPS+. Let's face it, Dalbec looked like he was toast for a little while there. The team decided to stick with him and I have to assume they're working with him hard on his approach at the plate.
  17. Bloom inherited a very tricky state of affairs for sure. And I think he's done a very good job. At the same time, the 2021 Red Sox are a good team, and Bloom made some bad acquisitions (Richards, Marwin etc.). So obviously what he took over was far from unworkable. He didn't have to perform miracles, just had to be smart. Which he is.
  18. Might as well throw in 2020 for good measure.
  19. Could be, but it's pretty early to judge.
  20. "Streaky" is way overused as a pejorative. Look at Mookie's game logs this year. He's streaky too. Many of the best hitters are.
  21. That has improved too, though.
  22. Bobby Dalbec has now played in 119 MLB games. .775 OPS 22 HR 68 RBI Some would say that's pretty good for the first 3/4 of your first MLB season. As far as bombs off bad pitchers - everybody fattens up their numbers that way.
  23. It's all part of the Death Rays strategy for domination. They're trying to convince richer teams it's a good idea to sell at the deadline even if you're a contendah.
  24. Why do you agree about player comfort in line-up slots when the only evidence is anecdotal? This illustrates that you're picking and choosing which assertions can be accepted based on anecdotal evidence alone.
