With robo umps, testing and troubleshooting at the lower levels would take care of the learning curve.

This is about how to get balls called strikes by fooling the umpire. So you've got a hitter at the plate who has a great eye-think J. D. Drew. He lets a pitch go because he knows it's 3 inches outside. But the ump, who's been fooled, calls it a strike. Yay! What about the hitter whose skill of having a great eye for the plate is cheated? Why does he get the short end of the stick?

Some technological advances are immediately noticed as big improvements. Like e-passes for bridges and other tolls, for example.

I predict that once this goes into effect most people are going to like it. It'll speed things up, it'll take away the distraction of checking the ump's calls. It won't disrupt the playing of the game at all. In exchange for a faster, fairer game, all you can lose is whatever kick it was you got out of bad calls.

People complained about bad balls and strikes calls long before the rectangle came along. The rectangle simply made the errors easier to see.

Agreed. It didn't bother me that much because we had our shot. Whichever team won 2 of 3 in that series won the division.

It's also worth noting the Tigers won the first 2 games of that series, which made the last one meaningless.

We watch the games to see the players perform. We don't watch to see the umps perform. Ideally, game officials are not noticed. But with balls and strikes calls, umps get noticed a lot.

I don't care much about Taylor, but he's definitely been better than average. 3.1 fWAR this year.

Defensive WAR for catchers has to be one of the most suspect numbers, though. I expect Bloom has his own numbers, and maybe even some anecdotal evidence, he will use to make the decision on Vazquez.

And we wouldn't even notice it. We wouldn't have to worry about and fixate on the accuracy of ball/strike calls any more, and we could focus on more interesting aspects of the game.

With what happened to the Red Sox in 2019, and with what happened to Scherzer this year, managers might shy away from this strategy in future.

Yeah, gone are the days when you thought the goal was to knock out the starter early so you could get into the crappy part of their bullpen.

We may get to the point we don't even talk about starting rotations and bullpens any more, just pitching staffs.

Everything I'm reading seems to confirm that Diaz is one of the very worst at calling balls and strikes. So I'm not really sure what notin means by assignments being determined on merit. It's simply ridiculous that one of the worst is screwing up the calls in an LCS game. It shows that whatever system they have is broken.
