Yes, that's what I read too. So why not have him only do base calls? Seems simple enough. Having him do balls and strikes every 4th game is like having J. D. Martinez catch every 4th game. It would be incredibly stupid. Why do we let the umpiring be handled in an incredibly stupid way?

I used to be a little opposed to robo umps myself. I think Laz Diaz in Game 4 of the ALCS was the final clincher for me. So f***ing absurd to have a hack like that still impacting big games in 2021.

It was not a simple matter, though, because the directives apparently came from the top. Everybody was following orders, Cora included. He made for a convenient sacrificial lamb. When the Red Sox got penalized, the poor guy who operated the video was the only one suspended. As if it was all his idea or something. What a joke that was.
