  1. Just as Dombrowski reportedly assessed him.
  2. What do you think, the Red Sox were keeping him in AAA to punish him or something? It seems pretty obvious they calculated that promoting him was too much of a risk because of the tax hit. And they couldn't get any other teams interested in trading for him.
  3. Right. If he was playing at a level that projected to a 2-3 WAR major leaguer, another team would have been willing to take on his $12 mill AAV.
  4. And if he played awesome in the minors I believe they would have called him up, tax hit or not. So he did have a chance.
  5. Yes, he got rich in the minors but was unfortunate career-wise.
  6. There's absolutely no doubt about that.
  7. Well, as some of us keep pointing out, Bloom was a protege of Andrew Friedman, who is now the biggest spender in baseball.
  8. They could, but I question whether anyone wants to make things any more complicated, especially with time such a factor. It'll be interesting to see what happens, but I have a feeling it'll be pretty much same old, same old.
  9. It's very possible that they remain in somewhat of a holding pattern this year, with so much money (and talent) coming off the backs after 2022. I tend to agree that if they do make a splash it will be Suzuki.
  10. Shaughnessy always makes me think of Ted Williams's classic description of Boston media as "Knights of the Keyboard".
  11. I don't know that there's much expectation of the tax threshold going up significantly. It was 210 million, and the owners wanted to reduce it to 180. My guess is they settle for a small increase from 210 million.
  12. To add to that, the Rangers acted like things are better than ever financially, didn't they, investing an insane $500 million in Seager and Semien.
  13. It's worse than that. For the second year in a row, Shaughnessy's only vote was for Jeff Kent.
  14. I've been reading highlights from it. If it's a matter of "forming an opinion", that means they didn't say anything like that directly, which is what I would expect.
  15. At that season-ending press conference Bloom called Bogaerts and Devers "cornerstone players" and said he wants to keep them with the team long-term. But he said something similar about Betts not long before trading him. The best thing is not to pay too much attention to what the brass says. They're not obligated to broadcast their plans to anyone.
  16. Did Bloom or Kennedy actually say they were not going to issue any big contracts?
  17. Seager got $325 mill, so that might be the proper comp now.
  18. Oh, it was one of "those" questions. A lot of the original AFL franchises are still alive and well, isn't that the main thing?
  19. It's funny, I'm an accountant and I've read the term "anti-trust" many times, but I have very little idea what it actually means.
  20. The AFL merged with the NFL.
  21. Don't underestimate the potential for stupidity.
  22. Yes, the word "afford" is subject to interpretation.
  23. Yeah, I get what you two are saying. It was just another cheap joke by me LOL As moon alluded to on the years of control thing, it can be difficult to separate issues of money from issues of principle.
  24. You can't keep great teams together long. The veterans get old quick and the young guys get expensive quick.
  25. Whoa, now that's really cynical.
