  1. LOL it's incredible how costly that trade was.
  2. The lack of a full ST will make the decisions with Whitlock and Houck even trickier.
  3. Another myth destroyed.
  4. It's going to be a full 162 game season. These guys are champs!
  5. And why would it only affect power hitters? The shift generally results in ground ball outs.
  6. A couple times and that was it.
  7. 4 of the top 5 are in states that start with M.
  8. Why wouldn't shifting work exactly the same against RHH?
  9. We're almost there, maybe.
  10. (More devil's advocacy.) There are reasons that hitters don't try to "adapt" to the shift. 1) Bunting and/or going the other way is much harder than people realize, especially when pitchers are throwing high 90's with movement. 2) Hitters are afraid of messing up their swings. 3) Instead of going the other way, they swing harder with more of an uppercut and try to hit more home runs. Run scoring hasn't changed that much because of the shift. It's still around 9 runs per average game. But there are more homers and a ton more K's. Much fewer balls in play.
  11. It's the positioning that's not a skill. That's all we're talking about.
  12. What's really frustrating is that they're not that far apart on most of the key issues. And it's definitely going to be a much better deal for the players than the last one. Yet here we are.
  13. Carefully, I hope.
  14. Just to play devil's advocate, at least throwing a slider requires physical skill by the player. The shift involves no skills of players. They don't even decide where to position themselves. It's all done by the team's data analysts.
  15. And another Freudian slip!
  16. In that poll that MVP cited: 36% in favor 44% against 20% undecided Now, if we can turn 3/4 of the undecideds into yes votes, it's 51-49 in favor! I'm just trying to have some fun with this nonsense.
  17. Fans and people who work at parks etc. will be the big losers.
  18. Baseball really is America's Game, I guess. Major League Baseball seems to represent everything that's good and bad about the country.
  19. It seems like there are too many issues, frankly. Human beings tend to like to make things more and more complicated. The luxury tax nuances being one example.
  20. I read an article that suggested the move toward banning the shift is from the players. Freddie Freeman was making some comments about how it's not easy to change one's approach to go the other way because of how hard pitchers are throwing et cetera. Then there's our old friend, MLB consultant Theo Epstein, who was hired to assist with possible refinements in the game, and I think this was one of the biggest issues he's been looking at.
  21. The truth is I don't disagree with your argument. I'm just not going to let this bother me. Old Red is right - more people would rather see the shift gone, and that's why it's happening.
  22. I'm much the same, with all sports now. With a PVR you can cut down the viewing time a ton.
  23. I think the average fan's perception is much like Old Red's - no sympathy for either side.
  24. And even Theo Epstein said the increasing use of analytics has hurt the quality of the game itself.
