That first offer of 8/$200 million came after the 2016 season, I believe, which was 3 years prior to his free agency, so it has to be evaluated in that context. Plus there's no indication that Mookie's side made a counteroffer. Bottom line, Dombrowski didn't get it done!

Maybe the thinking was that Barnes was replacing Diekman. Plus Diekman was awful, so replacing him wasn't a big deal.

What we'll never know is whether COVID-19 impacted Mookie's decision to take the Dodgers offer, which was really not much better than the Red Sox offer, especially since it included a pile of deferred money.

Any MLB team can beat any other MLB team on any given day. Pittsburgh swept 3 from Milwaukee earlier this month.

It's only anecdotal evidence from the player. It does kind of support why the Dodgers scooped him up. I was just mainly tweaking the Yankees.

But the point is about the Dodgers allegedly fixing a mechanical issue in his swing. You're certainly right that the sample needs to get larger to be taken seriously.

Fair point. Oddly enough when you look at Gallo's K/BB with the Yankees it's not really terrible. The BA sure is, though.

Agreed on all that. One other point, though. If the closer blows a game, it's not really a big deal in the overall picture. If he blows two in a row, though, people start to worry. And if he blows three in a row, the manager might look at changing things up a bit...

There are so many wacky names now it's hard to get to them all. The name Packy Naughton (Cards' pitcher) just makes me grin for no reason.

He is a clever devil. He's kind of the Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) of baseball executives. Things don't make sense and then they do.
