It's more accurate to say he was able to dump half of it. It's called cutting losses. If we didn't do it we'd be even more screwed.

No it isn't, not when we're evaluating Bloom's performance. Price's dead money was a hindrance to spending.

I can't totally let Bloom off the hook for 2022. He's responsible for Bradley, Cordero, Diekman, Robles etc. He could have done some things better. He has also made some good moves and is definitely improving the farm. And there's going to be a lot of cash freed up. So it'll be an interesting offseason, I think

I would allocate the blame pie for 2022 something like this: Lingering payroll issues 1/3 Bloom's failed moves (Bradley trade, Diekman signing etc.) 1/3 Injuries 1/3

Yes, and I was a Red Sox fan for 35 years before I saw them win it all. And it was very painful at times. I'm just saying that given my preference, it's not something I would go through. I didn't express it very well.

A lot of that is schedule-related. We had an excellent stretch against weaker teams.

In most businesses you don't give employees guaranteed contracts for up to 14 years and hundreds of millions that you may have to pay even if they do a lousy job or get hurt and can't work most of the time. The idea that major league baseball is like any other business is just comical.

A wild oversimplification. Major league baseball is not like most businesses. Most teams can't even think about paying "market value" to someone like Soto.

Bloom did a very nice job with Whitlock's deal, IMHO, adding two years of control beyond when he would have been a free agent. And the two extra years are team options with small buyouts.

There's a lot of risk in these early lockups too. Have you heard of a player named Tatis Jr. who got $340 million and is now famous for motorbike accidents and PED suspensions? Big ouch for the Padres, no?
