  1. Denny, my belief is that anyone who is in here posting is not a giver-upper. Someone who has truly given up has lost interest in even following the team, and they're not posting on a Sox message board. We're Sox obsessives, they're a big part of our life on this planet, and that's why we're here. This place has a lot of cathartic value for me. I vent some frustration and get it out of my system. And as soon as the first pitch of today's game I'll be following along like always.
  2. OK, that's your take on the Devers trade, which I understand. But it's not what we getting from the media reports, and in theory they could make a couple of moves that would give them a realistic shot at the playoffs. I'm not saying that's what'll happen. I would expect the Sox front office is undecided and are watching the game results just like us.
  3. Unfortunately the Sox are in the same position they've been every year since 2022 with the trade deadline looming - it's not clear which direction to go in. And the results of the last 3 trade deadlines all stunk.
  4. No it isn't, but 1.5 seasons are in at 1 game under .500, and the prognosis for the rest of 2025 isn't looking good right now.
  5. Yes. And in addition they paid $17 million of Sale's salary. Some might say they paid $17 million for Grissom. In either case the combined transactions cost $35 million or so for 2024. I can see reasons why they made the Sale trade, but it irks me when people talk about it like it was a virtual no-brainer.
  6. The only justifiable reason to make the trade was the money part. We all know the injury history. So did Atlanta, and they were obviously very interested in him.
  7. We don't know that they're not doing their jobs, though. Maybe Duran just doesn't take instruction well, or maybe he has a hard time keeping his head in the game.
  8. The proposed fixes I've heard so far are pretty wild, trying to encourage teams to leave the starting pitcher in longer with a reward and penalty system.
  9. But I'm not just judging individually, I'm saying if the only acquisition is Giolito, that makes this move questionable in itself. The 2024 pre-season projections for Sale and Giolito (before he got injured obviously) were roughly equal. So from a totally objective standpoint, Breslow did not upgrade the rotation for 2024, and we all thought that was an important thing to do. In a way I'm defending him because I think he probably got squeezed payroll-wise and that's why he traded Sale, to knock $10 million off the number.
  10. I agree wholeheartedly. But it's a hard thing to fix. Everyone seems to agree it's not possible to get pitchers to stop throwing so hard. It's hurting the game's watchability and it's hurting the health of the pitchers, but we're stuck with it.
  11. You can make a case, though, that there was no real reason to trade him, certainly not for a middle infield prospect. And certainly not when the only acquisition you're going to make is Giolito. My take on the Sale trade was that it was mainly about saving a few bucks.
  12. But why did they move to that focus? And do you think the increases in velocity and spin have little to do with it?
  13. I don't think anyone is seriously talking about sacking him at this point. If you're Breslow or a fan of him, the biggest concern seems to be a sort of rising tide of negativity about his communication skills or lack thereof.
  14. But he has to be judged on total results, and those are not good.
  15. We'll never know, but it's not implausible that Cora just decided he didn't want to make a bad situation worse. If the Sox were already deep in discussions about trading Devers, having a fresh new controversy about lack of hustle would not be ideal.
  16. The main reason there are fewer balls in play now is that pitches are being thrown harder and with more spin and are simply harder to hit. And the response of hitters in general has been to swing hard in case you hit it. It can be pretty ugly to watch, that's for sure.
  17. You can be very harsh for a man with a cute, fluffy little dog as his avatar. 😉
  18. Denny, the Sox have been playing .500 ball for 4 seasons now. I don't think it's a case of complaining for no reason.
  19. And Dombrowski is doing just fine with the Phils. All this probably grinds JH's gears a bit - assuming he's human.
  20. Up until 2019 he was impatient but successful. As we've talked about many times, he may have gotten an inflated opinion of his own acumen on how to run a baseball team.
  21. And I find it hard to believe that this was something Breslow really wanted to do all along. The trade might be good for the Sox long term, but it clearly hurts the team's chances for 2025. Breslow knows this and he knows that isn't the best thing for his career in Boston, working for a man with as little patience as Henry.
  22. Sorry, I didn't realize Cora had added that clarification about the groin issue.
  23. Yes, the 2022-2025 Red Sox have done an amazing nonstop dance around the .500 mark. We're getting close to 600 games of it.
  24. Yeah, it's brutal. I can't even watch the games much any more. I follow on Gameday and even that hurts.
  25. We tried the $10 million plays with guys like Garrett Richards and Corey Kluber and they were losers too. I'm starting to think that about 95% of pitchers suck now, when you factor in durability LOL.
