    The only explanation is that Sale was (arguably) offering a discount - 5 years, 145 million with deferrals that brought the present value to 128 million, compared to the 7/217 Price got. And one could speculate that the discount was tied to injury risk. But obviously, the risk was underestimated. There were some interesting comments by a baseball team doctor in connection with the Correa situation, about what a difficult position the docs get put in in these cases, being asked to do health projections that are extremely uncertain.

    Jax is a Pollyanna about his own team. Most Yankee fans are apoplectic over the fact they have one title and one WS appearance in the last 19 years.

    I don't think the situation in 2019 was quite that bad. And 2021 arguably proves that point. And 2022 could have been much better if better moves were made. Given the parameters handed him, Bloom has had a small margin for error, no question about that.

    I'm skeptical about Wacha. He was pretty awful in 2019, 2020 and 2021. He changed his pitch mix at the end of 2021 and that seemed to pay off for a while, but he also got injured and he also got teed off on his last two starts. I'm on record saying he gets less than Kluber.

    Wacha had better conventional numbers last year, but his advanced numbers were not as good, and he got treated like a pinata in his final two starts, which may have signaled where things were headed. Anyway, we now have the excitement of seeing whether or not Old Red is right about Wacha getting a bigger payday than Kluber.

    Yes, that's the whole argument. JH would have been concerned about losing money. And losing money can ultimately curb spending and therefore hurt the product on the field.

    It's just plain stupid saying you knew the team was trash. It was largely the same team that knocked out the Yanks and Rays the previous year.

    Lots of interesting possibilities. Hopefully it's a "good problem" as they say. We've had enough bad problems.

    You're still not getting it. We're talking about Henry not liking to lose money. We're not talking about crybaby fans any more.

    Yes, I did know that. Personally it doesn't matter much to me. We complained when they didn't exceed the threshold in 2021 because they were being cheap. We complained when they did exceed the threshold in 2022 because they were being stupid.

    With the addition of Kluber, we should see Houck in the pen. With Whitlock, I can see both sides of the argument. I'm not unhappy they're going to try him as a starter again. And I assume if it doesn't go well he will become a bullpen man for life.

    And that's why the fire sale/lost revenue might matter too!!!

    Nothing to do with the point I was trying to make. Why don't we just assume that every dollar matters to Henry, and that's why he didn't want to have a fire sale at the 2022 deadline, because it might cost a pile of revenue? It's a simple point, really.

    Hmmm...I think you're the guy who was worried that the JBJ buyout of $8 mill would cause Henry to spend less this year. Seems like a business thing.

    I'm fine with the Kluber signing and I was hoping we'd sign him as much as I was hoping for Eovaldi. I like the contract terms too. Good job by Bloom.

    What's the big difference? We were only 3 back with 2 months to go. Let's face it, the big difference is that we can dream of nice things in the offseason, because there are no actual games being played to spoil the fun.

    You're missing my point. I'm talking about where the 2022 team was at the trade deadline, when moon says they should have quit on the season and had a fire sale.

    Frankly, it looks to me like the hopes of the 2023 team are resting on much the same things that the hopes of the 2022 team were at the deadline: Sale, Paxton, Bello and the other kiddie starters. How come the 2022 hopes were dumb but the 2023 hopes are not?

    Yes, and I have been thinking about scenarios in which the Sox finish last again but Bloom keeps his job because of all the hopeful signs from the kids...

    Kluber is kind of a special case given his age and recent injury history and the apparent lack of competition from other teams. I don't think it means they'll never give out another big contract. I do think Bloom's "bridge to the kids" strategy is becoming clear. Hopefully it all falls into place!
