  1. Sale has an fWAR of 0.9 in 8 starts, so he's on pace for a final fWAR of a little over 3. That's in the ballpark of Maddux from say 2002 on.
  2. OK, you got me on the first point. As for Bloom and arms, that is the enigma. If we're not gonna grow 'em, we have to buy 'em or trade for 'em. Which of these things does Chaim actually like?
  3. This does makes sense.
  4. You're no fun either. I'm trying to be excited about some homegrown players and this is what I get.
  5. As much as we have fun with Boone over some of his moves, I think in some respects he must be a good manager, because the Yanks never stay down for long. And I have to commend his courage for closing out last night's game with Weber, Abreu and Marinaccio.
  6. That's just rude, Max. You don't think those 4 are promising?
  7. You might be selling Sale a little short, the way he's looked his last couple of starts.
  8. Crawford - 16th round, 2017 draft Bello - Intl FA, 2017 Casas - 1st round, 2018 draft Duran - 7th round, 2018 draft All from that old farm-builder Dave.
  9. Williams is a good example of success coming from both natural abilities and hard work. Some of it is absolutely genetic. It has to be, no way around it. If there was no genetic factor involved, every hitter who worked hard could be Ted Williams.
  10. Probably easier to spot the guys with bad instincts. Ones who might work hard but still get bad reads and jumps on the ball, and never become good fielders.
  11. Pretty good news, all things considered.
  12. The third one sucked too.
  13. Instinct is about when an outfielder consistently gets "good reads on the ball" and "takes good routes", that type of thing? Some of it could be taught but some would just be natural instincts?
  14. My man Refsnyder's numbers are looking much better now.
  15. Pablo Reyes off to a flying start to his Red Sox career.
  16. Price had a 2.4 fWAR in 2018, and a 2.3 fWAR in 2019, in only 107.1 IP. He wasn't quite as washed-up-looking as some are suggesting. Maybe if we traded him to a team other than the Dodgers we'd have to eat all but $10 mill a year or something like that.
  17. The first part is pure speculation, but that's what we're here for.
  18. It's all just pointless jibber-jabber, but personally I don't see the logic that Price's contract led to Betts being dealt. They offered Betts $300 million after all. It appears that John Henry had a line he wouldn't cross for a contract to any player, even Betts.
  19. But as moonslav has pointed out many times, those expensive pitching acquisitions from other organizations have been crucial to our 4 rings. I wouldn't undo any of it. Time travel is an absurd concept anyway, of course.
  20. Or as a wise old baseball philosopher once said, "You can't predict s*** in this game."
  21. And run differential is the best measure of a team's performance. Ours is pretty slim at this stage.
  22. I think it's been getting worse for years, mainly because of increases in velocity and spin, but that might be a new factor.
  23. Seems like more injuries to pitchers all the time.
