2022 Dodgers 111 wins 116 Pythagorean wins 2022 Phillies 87 wins 87 Pythagorean wins 2022 NL champs Phillies If that ain't a crapshoot I don't know what is. A 24 win difference and a 29 win Pythagorean difference. The MLB playoff system is more crap-shooty all the time.

The revenue comes from the fans. If a big chunk of them lose interest that would definitely hit Henry and the other owners in the wallet. So it is kind of a two-way relationship.

Of course it's flawed. They have also gone 7-1 against the Braves, Rangers and Jays over the last month. They have gone on some really good runs. They're dangerous in any one game or series. But if they don't get to the postseason it's all moot of course.

Pretty weak counter. The 2021 Red Sox had a Pythagorean record of 88-74. They beat a Rays team that had a Pythagorean record of 101-61.

Now Dipre, you know very well I didn't mean spend more just for the sake of jacking up the payroll number. The team as it stands does have a shot at the playoffs and the playoffs do have a lot of crap-shootiness. The 2021 Red Sox and 2022 Phillies are clear and recent examples.

Hey, we're actually getting 4 starting pitchers back. Sale, Whitlock and Houck from the IL, and Paxton from the SOL (Sell Off List).

Really? That's total malfeasance by MLB. Those 4 teams should play 1-4 and 2-3 based on records, regardless of which one won their division.

Part of the reason I was disappointed in the deadline was that I do think this team can beat good teams. The 2 wins against Atlanta were very impressive. Of course this team is erratic as hell too. I really like the expression "puncher's chance" to describe a team like this.

I agree. The only deal that would have made sense was acquiring a player with control beyond 2023.

That's debatable, Dipre. I'm not saying they should have spent like the Mets and Padres, but they could have spent a bit more. They are now middle of the pack in payroll, for the first time in a long time. And they're certainly not middle of the pack in market value, revenue or ticket prices. So I believe it's very much a debatable point.

Compete covers a lot of ground. I believe they wanted to compete in 2023, as in being in the hunt for a Wild Card spot, but obviously within a tight budget.

FWIW Ian Browne says Sale, Houck and Whitlock are all expected to be back by August 15. If true it does make the deadline inactivity a little more palatable.

Bloom didn't do enough to upgrade the starting pitching in the offseason, and he didn't do anything about it at the trade deadline. We've been able to survive with openers and bullpen games, but I don't think that strategy can hold up for long. And who knows if Sale, Whitlock or Houck will contribute at all the rest of the way? I don't have a good feeling about how this is going to play out.

Yeah, that's the kind of guy it seems they should have been looking at, not just a rental. But they decided instead to go with Mr. Nonexistent.

I'm not sure what mvp's theory is for who makes the baseball decisions. Somebody has to make 'em, we know that much.

Well, my speculation is that Bloom is the guy who blueprints all the team construction stuff, and everyone else is working within those blueprints, so the input Bloom gets is going to be about the kind of moves that fit into his philosophy. So it's not just the final say that's his, it's the underlying plans.

I don't know any way we could possibly determine whether fans are more collectively pissed off or not. Last year's team was playing like crap before the deadline, and perhaps unworthy of being improved. This year's team was playing pretty well but obviously needed some pitching help. I'm kind of pissed off but I'm also puzzled. I don't understand exactly how this front office thinks. The team seems to be headed in the right direction, but they also keep doing things that make you grind your teeth.

It's my educated guess that Bloom makes most of the decisions on the big team's player acquisitions and dispositions, subject of course to the payroll budget imposed by Henry. I'm sure Bloom receives a lot of information and opinions from others in the organization before making those decisions, but he has the final call. You mentioned something you had read about Bloom being much more consultative than DD was, to the point that maybe Bloom considered the input of others too much. That aligns with the process I'm describing.
