    We've been over this many times, but a sizable chunk of that $240 M payroll in 2019 consisted of players not acquired by DD.

    The only way you can blame DD for not locking him up earlier is if you think DD had a lot of say in the size of the offers that were made. To me that's less likely than that Henry was the one determining that. Nobody likes paying/overpaying elite talent more than DD.

    Part of the reason he got such a huge contract was the timing and the inflationary explosion that was seen in contracts this past offseason. Look at what Bogaerts got. I don't think there's much doubt there was also a public relations factor in Devers's extension. His profile as a player was well established. It's not like his defensive struggles started this year. If Tomase was going to write about this he should have done so when the extension was announced.

    As another poster pointed out, Bloom put this roster together, and we have a lot of inexperienced players and a lot of guys coming and going. And guys who simply aren't good fielders. I don't see why Cora should be the one who takes all the heat for it. He has very limited say over the roster. Duran improved a lot over last year, shouldn't the coaching get some credit for that? I realize nothing I say is going to change your view, I'm mainly just posting this for the sake of others reading.

    Inconsistent bat? Now that's just stupid. Tomase says some really stupid things.

    Not sure when I said I was down on fWAR. I've talked about the big differences between fWAR and bWAR for pitchers, which inspired me to suggest a new stat called FUBAR which is the average of the two. But for position players, I have no issues with fWAR at all.

    I get what you're saying. This Red Sox team has made a crazy number of gaffes. OTOH they have shown a lot of resilience, bouncing back from bad stretches and staying in the hunt. And that reflects well on Cora's abilities as a motivator. Players may be trying too hard to make things happen, that kind of thing.

    Disagree. He has benched Verdugo and called him out publicly. He's a player's manager but he's not a pushover.

    In April/May he had 21 K's and 20 BB's. Since June 1 it's 40 K's and 10 BB's.

    You have to admit those are horrific numbers. It looks like the book on him now is to attack the strike zone and it is succeeding immensely. His fWAR has petered down to 0.7.

    In 2022 they made a conscious decision to go over the threshold. (Welcome back JBJ!) Most of the heat about that has been for not trading Bogaerts/Eovaldi/JDM at the deadline to get back under the threshold. I don't think the accountants can be blamed, though.

    Yoshida's last 46 games/42 starts 29 K's 3 BB's That ratio is like twice as bad as Will Middlebrooks. Plus no less than 8 GIDP's. Yoshida's value as a major league player is vanishing before our eyes.

    The Red Sox 2023 budget will always be a mystery, i.e. why did they leave so much room under the cap?

    Kike is another example of a player the Dodgers let go, of course. What doomed Kike's season with the Red Sox was a combination of bad luck and bad decision-making that led to him playing shortstop. The Dodgers pounced on the chance to get him back for cheap and it has paid off for them and for Kike. Just one of those random things that happen in this often strange game. It might be even stranger how well Brasier has pitched for them. On the flip side, without Turner and Jansen the 2023 Sox would likely be toast a long time ago.

    Nope, it's not that simple at all. The Dodgers have parted with some high-priced talented themselves over the last few years. Two of them, Turner and Jansen, are playing for the 2023 Red Sox. Then there's Max Scherzer, Corey Seager, Trea Turner, Cody Bellinger and so forth. The Dodgers do spend plenty of money, but they're trying to do it the smart way, and they've been succeeding very well at this pretty much since Friedman became their CBO.

    It is a somewhat heated point of debate as to who is to blame for trading Betts. And it's obvious that we tend to pick sides with Red Sox executives just like we do with everything else. The general consensus is that the decision to trade Mookie had to come from ownership, because they are the biggest stakeholders and we're talking about an enormously popular and talented player who commanded a massive, long-term contract. But Bloom is the guy who pulled the trigger, so it's also natural that some are going to point to him as a culprit in the affair.

    What fans forget is that after 2018 the Red Sox front office said they'd like to keep all of Betts, Bogaerts and Sale but didn't think they could keep all 3 of them.

    No, because he was better than that. Manny was one of the best hitters in the history of the game.

    If ya really want to know what I think, I think predictions like these are stupid and pointless. Betting is a whole different story. Betting is even more stupid, but at least it gets the adrenaline flowing.

    I suspect he'll start tonight vs. Lynn and sit tomorrow vs. Urias.
