a) I believe they have to put him on the 40 man roster for 2024. They have to try to make him a major league pitcher.

I agree. The heat is on Bloom to address the starting pitching for 2024, and the answers aren't on the farm.

The Jays trade for Hicks is a fair one to look at in terms of "why didn't Bloom do something like that"? Possible answers that are all open to scrutiny: 1) In spite of the 105 MPH fastball, Hicks's overall numbers are spotty (hefty walk rate). 2) The Jays gave up 2 starting pitching prospects. I have no idea if they're any more than lottery tickets. 3) Hicks is strictly a rental.

So the same thing could happen all over?

On paper, the Jays looked as good going into 2023 as they were in 2022. They didn't lose much, they signed Bassitt, they traded for Varsho. They have Gausman and Berrios. Vlad Jr., Bichette, Springer, Chapman. Kiermaier and Merrifield as utility guys. But for whatever reasons, it hasn't translated to a great W-L record. They are still in a playoff spot, though.

I think I already issued mine. That was mostly my old Red Sox superstitious-ness kicking in when I heard Dombrowski snatched him from us. But I think Sox fans should be pretty happy we're going to get a chance to develop him.

Seriously? He's already at 26 mill this year. He was at 42 mill in 21. So far he's earning his pay, which is much more than you can say for most guys with monster contracts.

Although it must be said, Urias probably has a better chance of catching up to a major league fastball than Ray Davies ever did.

If we're not going to sign any pitchers to long-term contracts, what's our 2024 rotation going to look like? Should Bloom just sign some more 1 year $10 million types?

No worries, Bloom passed on every available starter. He's extremely adept at that.

There don't seem to be many pitchers who aren't dice rolls. Gerrit Cole hasn't been, but he cost $324 million.

He's not a stud but he's above average when healthy. Which starting pitchers do you actually like?

I don't see that he's wrong. The complaints about not selling off at last year's deadline have never stopped, really. And there was certainly lots of talk about trading Paxton, Duvall etc. this year.

If my priorities were meritorious, I wouldn't be here nearly as much.

Anyone who says we're guaranteed to be much better next year needs to project the 2024 rotation.

No, you're not a negative Nancy. The health of pitchers is the biggest crapshoot of them all. And the greatest sustainability model in the world won't change that.

But IF Sale was healthy and we got Flaherty...Sale, Paxton, Bello and Flaherty could be a pretty decent four. Needless to say there's a pile of Injury Luck involved.
