  1. One other possibility is the offer was something like this: 9 years for $270 mill guaranteed Plus vesting option or team option for additional year at $30 mill
  2. Why, what exactly is the evidence he wanted to leave? I see none. Hunches are fine, but that's all they are. I don't think there's any evidence Betts wanted to leave or that he didn't want to leave. Juan Soto is a different story. He reportedly turned down a $440 million offer, and that report was never disputed. So yeah, he wanted to leave.
  3. Merloni seems to be a go-to guy for this stuff.
  4. But who says easy information is the only good information? I certainly remember a number of games where folks described the Red Sox defense as a clown show. Most of them were losses, I believe.
  5. I was merely stating a fact.
  6. Runs scored is the bottom line, though. 1968 teams scored 3.42 per game. 2023 teams score 4.62 per game. All the strikeouts do tend to make the game itself uglier, that's for sure.
  7. Defense is more of an X factor, Max, not quite as obvious but can be significant. Every metric shows our defense has gifted a lot of runs to the opposition this year.
  8. Last night they put on a singles dance.
  9. Pivetta has actually complicated things a bit by pitching incredibly well down the stretch.
  10. It might be worth mentioning that Turner has experienced a pretty bad late slide, possibly injury-related. His fWAR has sunk to 1.3.
  11. I think most of us would be satisfied if they bring in 2 good starters and 1 good reliever.
  12. I've read nothing about where he got the information. My guess is he got it from someone in the organization who spoke "on condition of anonymity".
  13. True, but last offseason they were operating on a pretty tight budget, apparently, the end result of which was only $10 million being spent on starting pitching.
  14. Probably not, but it's not the worst idea. I agree with the premise that if we're spending big this offseason the focus has to be pitching.
  15. Not to mention 6 for 12. We're batting .500 in finishing last over a 12 year period.
  16. Dalbec put up great numbers at Woo this year. The injury to Casas provided one last chance to show if he had improved his approach. MLB pitchers are eating him up again. Game over, basically.
  17. So I've determined that the original source of the $300 million offer story was Lou Merloni. Lou is a pretty outspoken guy, so maybe he will have more to say about Mookie's denial at some point.
  18. The numbers are all inflated by the Fenway Factor, moon. 2023 Red Sox Home 279/344/453 - 797 OPS Road 238/303/399 - 702 OPS Yoshida Home 306/360/475 - 834 OPS Road 266/313/412 - 725 OPS
  19. That's a fair question, and I've thought about it. It all depends what you think of Mookie as a person, when it comes down to it. To me he's been nothing but class in his comments about his time in Boston, and in general he has avoided talking about how it went down altogether. I think he's smart in a PR way. He knows no good can come of it. But on this trip back to Boston, he couldn't avoid being asked questions about it. And for whatever reason he decided to address that fact point as part of his message that he never wanted to leave Boston. Maybe that number being out there bothered him because it suggested he had played hardball. I'm just speculating on a lot of this, of course. But it would be strange of him to deny that number if they did in fact offer him that, because there would be multiple people who would know. Actually, Mookie basically invited the press to talk to Bloom about it, and Bloom would likely know, huh?
  20. I don't really know what opinion has to do with the question. This is about facts. Who first reported the $300 million offer? Who was the original source of the information? It's all pretty murky. The veracity of the number seems to have been largely supported by Mookie not denying it back then. It puzzles me why he would now overtly lie about it. He could easily have brushed it off by saying they just couldn't reach an agreement. But he made a point of denying the $300 million.
  21. If Dombrowki was the man setting the numbers, Betts would still be in a Red Sox uniform. Here's the thing, though. Now that Mookie has come forth and denied the $300 mill, why wouldn't these same reliable sources be refuting him?
  22. I think all the numbers are "RAR". I'm out of my depth when it comes to defensive metrics, though. I tend to focus on the one number, WAR.
  23. Couldn't it just be one source, repeated by others?
  24. Speaking for myself, I go by the FanGraphs numbers, which show Devers at 5.9 runs below replacement, and Yoshida at 16 runs below replacement. (Casas at 15.9 runs below.) Defensive metrics can vary quite a bit, obviously.
