  1. To each their own.
  2. This brings to mind Slasher's complaints about WAR. He thought it makes much more sense to use WAA (Wins Above Average). He's probably right.
  3. Yeah, my position now is that when Henry first started thinking about the possibility of not signing Mookie to an extension, that's when he and the franchise really started going off the rails. It may be a while yet before it's back on the rails.
  4. An fWAR of 0.1 to 0.5 is well below average for a starter. Average is about 2.0. So if Rafaela is 0.1 to 0.5, he will not be a plus player. The mitigating factor being he's young and hopefully improving.
  5. His negative fWARs for 2021, 2022 and 2023, and the fact he's probably done as an MLB player, might be even more pertinent. To me this is the one of the things that WAR really tells us. Can a guy with a great glove and a terrible bat be a positive contributor? Generally speaking, no. The only value would be as a late inning defensive replacement.
  6. Fans, huh? You think a negative WAR should just be ignored?
  7. NESN ratings would probably be more revealing than attendance figures.
  8. One of the new points in the post-firing narrative seems to be "Bloom didn't understand the market he was working in." To me, that really sounds like the owners trying to deflect blame for their rebuilding, cost-cutting measures.
  9. Yeah, notin was just kind of adding to his post count with that one...
  10. One thing about rest days that really gets an old schooler's knickers in a knot is when a player is rested the day before an off day. It should be abundantly obvious that under modern load management theory, travel days are not considered to be rest days. We've got Exhibit A for that theory in Yoshida. Everyone agrees that the MLB travel schedule is one of the biggest factors in his wearing down this year. And before someone else says it, I'll say it: "A lot of good Cora's rest days did Yoshida, huh?"
  11. The thing is, Cora has to plan around 13 players, not just one. If it was one it would be a lot simpler. And again, analytics doesn't really buy into hot and cold streaks. The patterns are very random throughout the year for most hitters.
  12. There's no way they can schedule around guys being hot and cold - analytics doesn't believe in hot and cold anyway.
  13. The wrong-handed pitcher thing isn't a lock. Some pitchers don't have big splits. Or some wrong-handed pitchers have good numbers against Devers. Cora has all this data and more at his fingertips. He is vastly better informed than we are and he knows the game. I have faith in him to choose rest days on a logical basis, even when we don't see the logic spelled out for us.
  14. Seems like it may have been a bad idea. You're the guy who says the Rays over-extend pitchers and then dispose of them. Kluber seems to fit that pattern.
  15. I meant the Angels.
  16. I think it's safe to assume that analytics have now been brought into it.
  17. Yes, we're reaching the point that 150 innings makes you a horse...
  18. Duran had the best fWAR on the team this year on a per-game basis, so there's that...
  19. You can count on them to do whatever is worst.
  20. I'm oversimplifying, too. I'm sure Cora's approach is a tad more flexible than sitting Devers on the 15th of every month...
  21. Sure seems like a lot of bad things flowed from the loss of Betts, like Bloom's crazy quilt outfield alignments...
  22. 1) Spreads them out more evenly. 2) The schedule of opposing starting pitchers is not that easy to nail down, especially with teams using openers and such. Seems like you see "TBD" listed more and more.
  23. You're assuming that all 9 were "rest days" and none were health-related. Scheduling mostly in advance makes sense to me.
  24. Omitting Freddy there reeks of leftyphobia...
