  1. Generally speaking when a team is losing a lot of one-run games the finger gets pointed at the manager. Personally I think too much of it is randomness to draw any conclusions one way or the other.
  2. Well, it's an interesting take, but the 'street-smart' premise seems a little dubious to me.
  3. I think they just wanted Bernardino to get a bit of a rest.
  4. That's a pretty small tweak though. Personally I've never seen any explanation for why Pythagorean record even matters. Maybe early in the season it might tell you something. But we've seen teams with big variances sustained over entire seasons, so what does it matter?
  5. Yeah, in baseball I think Pythagoras is pretty much wiped out by Random-ass.
  6. What does inexperience have to do with this kind of record?
  7. Personally I still like the way the team is playing. That was a tough road trip and it was the conclusion of one of the toughest stretches of games I've seen in a while, starting with the Cubs series. With this new Manfredized schedule you have to play everybody, and sometimes the good ones get strung together.
  8. In one of those losses we scored 6 runs with Crochet on the mound. Win that one and we're 3-3 and we're feeling more Polly and less Nelly. Such is baseball.
  9. And if you had your way, we'd have even less Pedroia to talk about! 😉
  10. I think there's plenty of randomness in the home/road splits too. For whatever reason this year we've been feasting at Fenway like in days of old. And Pythagoras is perplexed by our 27-34 road record with +17 differential.
  11. They have winning records against the Dodgers, Yankees and Astros, but I guess they don't count.
  12. OK, but it's the part about our offense not being as good as their stats that's the real issue here. And I do get what you're saying. I just think the same principle applies to other teams too. We always tend to focus on the weaknesses of our own team. The Astros are a good team. We went 4-2 against them, all after the trade deadline. That's good.
  13. Sorry Max, I was just being snippy because you "Meh"d me. Nobody likes being "Meh"d.
  14. The biggest uncontrollable issue is the quality of the opposing pitching.
  15. But if you're only watching Sox games and not looking at stats, how do you know how other teams compare in these areas?
  16. In the words of Franz Kafka: "Only our concept of time makes it possible for us to speak of the Day of Judgement by that name; in reality it is a constant court in perpetual session.
  17. Roman is pretty much as badass as this guy was!
  18. Nice topic, guys! 🤪 Tail end of a game thread is the right place for it, though.
  19. Like I said as soon as we made the trade, I'm hoping Bailey saw something that could be improved with a little tweak.
  20. 2B is kind of an oddball position. It's where you put your second-best middle infielder. They're not usually one of your best hitters. They tend to be disposable. Like my guy Mark Bellhorn. You don't see a lot of big contracts for 2Bers. Pedroia was an obvious exception.
  21. Right, but this didn't remove any wonkiness with Anthony.
