  1. I guess we have to keep pointing out that the Red Sox had a club option on Sale for 2025. That combined with Sale's age and injury risk would make offering an extension irrational. This is just deflecting from the real issue of whether it made sense to trade him.
  2. The answer, which should be obvious, is that there are different types of risk. The risk with Giolito was performance risk, after being a batting practice pitcher for the last two months of the season.
  3. And on the face of it, Giolito was an extremely risky investment of $38 million after his disastrous finish to 2023. It's hilarious that the Braves are potentially getting 3 years of Sale for the same net cost as the Sox are paying for potentially 1 year of Giolito.
  4. I perfectly understand that a lot of Sox fans were fed up with Sale and happy to see him go. But the guys that run the team aren't supposed to think like the fans.
  5. It's neither. I didn't "expect" it, but I thought there was a decent chance of it because he finished last year healthy and reasonably effective. TJ surgery is incredibly common now, and some of Sale's injuries were s*** luck. And his attitude never wavered. I thought he might be due for some better luck. I'll say it again - there was no real reason to make this trade. We got another middle infield prospect out of it. Big deal. It was another mid-market type move.
  6. I agree, Denny. Being 14 games behind the Yanks at this point SHOULD BE depressing. Times have changed in some ways.
  7. Yeah, I think moon's a little in denial with "several".
  8. I dunno, I was reading some comments by a guy who was at the game last night. He was surrounded by chanting Yankee fans in the stands and on his way out of the park. He said he's a long time ticket buyer and he's never experienced it anywhere near as bad as it was last night.
  9. I think what happened in 2022 is part of the perils of being mediocre in the 12 team playoffs era. I was against selling in 2022 because I thought we had a shot at the playoffs. Same thing last year. Arizona made the WS last year with 84 wins and a minus 15 run differential. This is what Manfred wants.
  10. They really do have to tell Duran to be a bit more careful.
  11. The Yankees will lock up Soto. He has rejuvenated the whole team.
  12. Grissom has gone a long long time without hitting a home run against a major league pitcher, that much is not in dispute. And 1 EBH in 87 PA's is incredibly feeble. I think he's a bust. If he proves me wrong I'll have some crow and fries.
  13. I can handle one .500 season. Stringing them together gets tiresome. I'm not feeling optimistic about this team at all. We have some young players worth watching, but that's about it.
  14. We saw the ugly downside of this "sorta have a chance in July" deal the last 2 years. Looks like Breslow is going to be in the same position as Bloom. If so you have to think he's going to sell.
  15. A lot is being made about Phillies fans and now Yankees fans taking over Fenway the last two series. Pretty embarrassing.
  16. I mean, we should be depressed about being 14 behind the Yanks and 10.5 behind the Birds in mid-June. It's only the ever-expanding playoffs and the possibility of 84 win teams winning the pennant that keeps any hope alive.
  17. Wins and losses are like mood-altering drugs, agreed. But the general picture doesn't change. We've been flipping and flopping and floundering around the .500 level 3 years in a row.
  18. But StatCast or Savant or whatever also show that relatively speaking he doesn't hit the ball especially hard, I believe.
  19. He's right though. We have folks talking about who to sell at the deadline not long after the season starts. It doesn't mean they're bad people. It's about the teams the Sox keep putting together. And after the fact we have a lot of lamenting about not selling off in 2022 etc. It's just a depressing state of affairs all around.
  20. I have to agree. That's the position they keep creating with these mediocre teams they assemble. Look what it did to poor Bloom. They turned him into a deer in the headlights looking for the invisible third fork in the road.
  21. Just look at the Yanks. They have good young guys like Gil and Volpe, but they don't build everything around them. They spend and spend.
  22. The Sox front office pretty much ran out the white flag in the offseason this time.
  23. Can't do that until the time is exactly right!
  24. Maybe Andrew Bailey's methods only work short term with some guys.
  25. One thing's for sure, it's been a nightmarish start for Grissom as a Red Sox. A recurring hammy injury, a .367 OPS and (perhaps the scariest number of all) 1 EBH in his 87 PA's, a remarkable fWAR of minus 0.9. While Sale is indeed a Cy Young candidate. Total Hapless Harry stuff for the Sox.
