  1. You keep the posting fee if you don't sign the player. That was made clear in the Dice-K proceedings which Boras dragged out until the final hour.
  2. The Rays have done a brilliant job in the draft, especially with pitching. Can they maintain that now that they're finishing so high in the standings? We'll see. At some point the combination of high finishes and low budgets has to catch up with them...
  3. Here's another way to look at it. In the 10 years of the Henry ownership the Sox have reached 95 wins 6 times. In the prior 52 years they reached 95 wins 4 times.
  4. I think the re-signing of Andrew Miller makes plenty of sense, though I trust they're not actually counting on him. It's a non-guaranteed deal which can cost at most a little over $1 million. We're getting a new pitching coach, maybe something can be salvaged from this guy yet. At the least maybe they can convert him to a decent reliever.
  5. There are rumors that Bobby Jenks will be playing Santa. The cash-strapped Sox brass need to get some value for their $12 million.
  6. Wow, that really is amazingly vague and lame. And it sounds like we're going to get a nice box of pens and paper back for Epstein.
  7. Sure. Just like Sabathia said several times that he wouldn't use the opt-out in his contract. We should all be laughing our asses off when we hear such things.
  8. I don't think going over the tax threshold like they have is such a big deal. Okay, if you do it two years a row the rate goes to 40%. But if they never go over the limit by a huge amount the Red Sox are never going to pay that much in tax, relative to their overall revenues and expenses.
  9. I don't think you even have to interview anyone, if you're good at making stuff up. C. J. Wilson says that a lot of the things that have been reported about what's going on with his free agency are 'complete lies'.
  10. If the Sox could pull off a trade for the A's Bailey that could really work. His numbers were off a bit last year but his first two seasons were Papelbon-esque. Overall he's converted 75 of 84 save opportunities. Plus he'll be relatively cheap. Will take something significant to get him. Rangers are reportedly very involved.
  11. Good one. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the networks did propose it to the Sox, but the deal didn't get done because of issues over compensation.
  12. Maybe it was just a bad connection and all they really said was, 'What will it take to get him? F**k knows.'
  13. The Sox never really had that much leverage, I don't think, because Epstein was clearly a goner who could do them no good by sticking around. Shaughnessy's suggestion of holding out for Garza seems pretty ludicrous.
  14. Wouldn't be surprised if Theo already had a quick conversation with Cherington. 'How you likin' it so far, buddy...you know, we just might be able to find a place for you here.' Lucchino might as well just take over as GM.
  15. Eck seems to me to be a guy whose baseball knowledge and insight leans heavily to the pitching component. As such, he might make an excellent pitching coach but I don't think he would be a good manager.
  16. Based on what numbers?
  17. On the leadership/clubhouse thing, the Joe Torre book did have some fairly interesting stuff on this. You could even see some parallels between what happened with Torre and what happened with Francona. Torre confirmed that it was important to have guys within the clubhouse that helped you control things. Paul O'Neil was a guy who would get in other players' faces when they weren't giving it full effort or whatever. And he was respected so other players would listen to him. The impression of Jeter was that he was quiet but that he did give leadership by example because of his work ethic and the fact that he wanted to play every game even when he wasn't 100%.
  18. Well, if you're a conspiracy theorist, runs scored in the AL had a fairly precipitous drop in the year 2010, from averages of about 9.6 per game in 2008-2009 to about 8.9 in 2010-2011. One of the theories advanced to explain it has been a slight expansion of the strike zone. And yes, J. D. was one of the guys who verbalized that theory.
  19. No question, the ability to draw the walk was a big part of his game and when he wasn't getting the borderline calls it really hurt him.
