  1. There's a breaking rumor that the Red Sox are working to trade Scutaro to the Rockies. No other details yet.
  2. I'll say this: if Oswalt signs with someone else for 6-7 million, a big chunk of RSN is gonna be royally pissed. And I know the Sox FO knows this.
  3. Pumpsie, I think you're getting a little too excited about the future benefit of staying under the cap this year. Let's say we do, and that our tax rate for 2013 is 'only' 17.5% or whatever it is. Do you really think that's going to entice them to go over the cap by a big chunk in 2013 and move into the 200 million range?
  4. Well personally, I think Roy Oswalt deserves 6 million every bit as much as Bobby Jenks. Sign the man!
  5. I'm pretty sure the LT is calculated at the end of the season and they pro-rate salaries of players who changed teams during the year. The A-Gon case was different. If you sign an extension before the start of the season that extension becomes part of the AAV calculation for that year but if you sign it after the start of the season it doesn't.
  6. At this point the correct wording is 'there may be one more spot available'. There's a committee made up of MLB & MLBPA reps who have until March 1 to decide if the new format goes into effect for 2012.
  7. It sounds like the Sox might have a real arbitration showdown with Ortiz. If it goes to that it'll be very interesting to see what the arbitrator decides. Their 12.65 million offer is a small raise from last year.
  8. Ultimately the blame for the neverending string of medical screwups has to fall back on upper management. They fired Dr. Bill Morgan after 2004, for reasons that were never disclosed. Morgan was the guy who devised the procedure on Schilling that helped save the title run. And then they permit Gill and his fellow bunglers to continue negatively impacting entire seasons until finally firing him, much too late, after 2011.
  9. This brings to mind Dr. Thomas Gill's infamous words 'We aren't going to MRI a bruise' which Ellsbury attributed to him. As it turns out Gill may be the single biggest factor in the Red Sox injury problems of 2010-2012. 'We don't MRI bruises' is probably the slogan that sits on his desk. Ellsbury, Pedroia, Buchholz, Crawford...Gill may be the worst sports medical guy in history. My daughter plays high school basketball and before the year they were all sent for MRI's on their knees as a preventative measure. But the Boston Red Sox scrimp on MRI's.
  10. Seriously, the Sox medical people have been criminally inept the last few years. They didn't think there was any point giving Buchholz an MRI last year either until that darn back pain just wouldn't go away on its own. Unbelievable.
  11. Yeah, basically I agree. Sign Oswalt.
  12. If you read the story in the first link you posted, it says it's virtually inevitable that they will go over the cap. The consensus seems to be that they will go over the cap but are trying not to go over it by much.
  13. You're missing the small salaries from McDonald down to Reddick. Those are all individual amounts. Also those numbers now have to be updated for Sweeney signing for 1.75 and Salty for 2.5. A new projection should put us at already around 180 million. There's no way we're under the cap unless they trade somebody.
  14. I get 178 million. All those small salaries at the end have to be added together. Not sure why he didn't total it.
  15. That second link you posted is a very good summary of the numbers.
  16. From what I've seen, they're probably going over the 178 million cap whether or not they sign Oswalt. It sounds to me like they've set a budget maximum which might be 5 million over the cap or something like that.
  17. One thing nobody's mentioned is how much say Queen Linda might have in all of this.
  18. George Steinbrenner wasn't 'baseball people' until he bought the Yankees.
