  1. Correct. My props are limited to his evaluations of prospects...I do like it when somebody gets out ahead of the crowd on one of our prospects and turns out to be right. Fred also mentioned Swihart, I have heard good things about him and also Bogearts...this franchise could really use some young stars coming up.
  2. Fred's been touting Lavarnway for a couple of years now, since before too much was known about him, so if Lavarnway does turn out to be the real deal I'll have to give him props on that one.
  3. Meanwhile Ryan Lavarnway just crushed a home run off Scott Baker in the first inning of the first spring game.
  4. A lot of star athletes from other sports have had dreams of becoming pro golfers. Only one has ever succeeded-former NFL quarterback John Brodie, who qualified for the senior tour and won a tournament.
  5. The fact there are no defenders doesn't mean it isn't difficult. If you want to do an apples-to-apples comparison of hitting a baseball to directly comparable activities, the problem is that there aren't very many. One of the other difficult activities mentioned in the survey was pole vaulting. No defenders there either.
  6. I believe it's reaction time that is tipping the scales in favor of hitting the baseball. And that's fine. I accept that it's an extremely difficult thing to do. But on the other hand, all you are attempting to do is hit something. Can you compare this to other difficult sport tasks that require skill and accuracy? Such as hitting the green on a 250-yard par 3 or nailing a 50-yard field goal? Apples to oranges maybe.
  7. What convinced me Shaughnessy was a douche was his unrelenting insults toward Schilling. Now I know Schilling is a guy who could rub people the wrong way, but Shaughnessy would call him the Blogboy, or the Big Blowhard, in every freaking thing he wrote about him.
  8. Unfortunately statements like that are just waiting to get picked apart. I might be able to hit a 90 MPH fastball once out of 50 swings. But I could probably never kick a 40-yard field goal. I'm not trying to be a smartass but like I say statements like that can usually be picked apart.
  9. On the offensive side, Salty and Shoppach could be a very good platoon. Salty was 247/304/481 against RH with 11 HR and 18 2B in 243 AB. Shoppach was 241/344/444 against LH with 7 HR in 108 AB.
  10. We could use some extra help with all those dumpster boys.
  11. Cafardo has a pretty interesting piece this morning about some of the changes Valentine is instituting in the spring training programs.
  12. Exactly. Let's give the man his chance.
  13. Who did Beckett blame for what happened on the field?
  14. My guess is he's probably done talking to the media about this stuff now. We'll see.
  15. But when he wasn't talking about what happened last year he was getting reamed for that. Now he sits down and gives his view of what happened and he gets reamed for being outspoken.
  16. People need to read the other stuff that's in the interview too. He talks about how happy he is, how he loves the city of Boston and the fans etc. If you try to take in the big picture, Beckett comes across to me as a very honest guy. He gives a lot of detail about his conditioning and why he gained weight and stuff like that. He's not nearly as sour as people are trying to make him out to be.
  17. Props to Jason and hey, why not some props for Dan Duquette for stealing VTek and D-Lowe from Seattle. One of the best moves in the organization's history.
  18. As for the 13 wins last year, it should have been 18 easily. He got lousy run support, it was just bad luck. When you throw 193 innings with a 2.89 ERA for the best-hitting team in baseball, it's bad luck to only win 13 games.
  19. I just read the excerpts from the interview with Beckett on the WEEI website. Beckett seemed most upset about the snitching that related to Francona. Most of the stuff he said seemed positive to me.
