  1. Agon's pop is diminished, that's for sure. We can only hope that he's had some weakness or something in his shoulder that will heal. At least he's getting some hits.
  2. Yeah, it looks ominous at the moment. I don't think Epstein can be faulted for the Gonzo deal though. I'd say about 90% of Sox fans wanted Gonzo, and when it looked like the deal might fall through people were livid. It's all part of the perils of being a rich team and signing $150 million contracts. Maybe we should cease and desist with these types of contracts forever. There are very few sure things.
  3. Youk with the walk-off single tonight. It seems like the baseball gods are having a yuk on us these days. I won't be surprised if D-Mac goes on a tear against us this weekend.
  4. jung, I think your point about the poor execution in areas of defence and fundamentals is a solid one. Those are things that can turn the outcome in these tight games.
  5. I'd have to see some numbers that support the idea that pitching generally improves as the season goes on. The league average team ERA by month so far in 2012: April 4.06 May 4.06 June 3.99 July 4.41 Also I meant that the 30-26 record was not good considering the good pitching numbers.
  6. Just read a somewhat amusing footnote on this...McDonald's older brother, Donzell (!) played 5 games for the Yanks in 2001.
  7. Hey look, it'd be huge to have a stud horse pitcher like a Pedro or a Schilling or a 2007 Beckett. I don't disagree that our starting pitching still doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. I'm just trying to point out that overall, our pitching has been reasonably solid for a while now, and it isn't what's been costing us most of these losses. At the end of the day, we just may have too many flaws in all facets of the game to fix this year.
  8. 5 losses on this road trip and only one resulted from a bad performance by the starting pitcher.
  9. We've lost 15 games since June 1. In 10 of those losses we gave up 4 runs or less and still came out on the short end. In 31 games since June 1 we've only given up more than 5 runs in a game 4 times. That's pretty damn good for a supposedly strong offensive team.
  10. Right. And doesn't that seem to be because our offence can't come up with any big hits in those games, to turn 3-2 losses into 4-3 wins?
  11. Hamels is a pipe dream anyway. He'll be looking for Cliff Lee money and someone will be willing to pay it. Won't be us. Henry is still licking his wounds from Dice-K, Lackey and Crawford. He's not about to open a fresh one.
  12. Except for DiceK's implosion, the pitching was excellent on this road trip and it netted us a 2-5 record. You're not going to win many games in which you score 2 runs.
  13. I don't think Hamels is a realistic possibility at all, not even as a free agent this offseason. I don't think this ownership will be in any hurry to take on another $20 million a year contract.
  14. I think Pumpsie's focus is on our W-L record. And to a certain extent I agree that you can't get around the W-L record. 42-39 is dismal, no matter what potential upgrades are on the horizon. We keep losing games we shouldn't be losing. Losing 4 of 6 to Seattle and Oakland is ridiculous.
  15. I keep reading about how our offense is fine and our pitching is our big problem. Yet on this current road trip we're not giving up many runs, but we're losing games. Everybody knows Fenway is a good hitter's park. But you have to really go into the numbers to see what an impact Fenway has. These are some simple numbers which I think show how much both our offensive numbers and pitching numbers are inflated by the Fenway Factor. American League average runs scored per game = 4.37 American League average ERA = 4.04 American League average WHIP = 1.31 Red Sox home average runs scored per game = 5.60 Red Sox road average runs scored per game = 4.46 Red Sox home average runs allowed per game = 4.95 Red Sox road average runs allowed per game = 3.85 Red Sox road ERA = 3.65 Red Sox road WHIP = 1.23
  16. That 9th inning for the Sox was a real horrorshow. First and second, no outs, Punto up to bunt...Nava should be coming to the plate with one out and runners at second and third, Pedroia behind him. Ooops...oh well, at least Nava is coming up with a runner at second. Ooops...Nava is walking back to the dugout without even having that chance.
  17. Looks like we're going against a kid named Griffin. He threw 6 shutout innings in Texas his last start.
  18. The clutch hitting was terrible, but Valentine did call for the bunt in the 9th, and Punto botched it.
  19. Probably done. He really iced the cake last night. It's a tossup between him and Bard for who had the ugliest exit from the scene this year.
  20. Interesting package of news there.
