  1. The team is playing s***** ball, and that's not because of the umpiring. But as a totally separate matter those charts do show an inexcusable error rate by the umpires. I don't know what can be done about it but it just isn't right. Pitches on the border you can understand, but not ones that everybody at home can easily see are well inside or outside the zone.
  2. Now 14-19 at Fenway this year. That just ain't right.
  3. Man, I cringed when I saw Houston scored 11 runs today, but Lowrie was 0 for 5 with 3 K's.
  4. I love the stats as much as anyone, but sometimes you can slice 'em and dice 'em all you want and it just doesn't matter. The bottom line is, we're having a f*** of a time winning games.
  5. Gotta think not...I'd expect his first appearance will be 'low-leverage'.
  6. Look, on the one hand you are speculating that Scutaro may have been traded because he was the clubhouse snitch. So if Youkilis was that big a problem, why wouldn't they have unloaded him? It's all guessy-guessy stuff, Nick. Conspiracy theorizing.
  7. It's easy to say 'not moving Youkilis was a huge blunder', but as has been pointed out, he wouldn't have had much trade value in the offseason. They would have gotten very little back and would probably have had to eat most of his salary. As for the problem in the clubhouse stuff, that's all speculation by the writers.
  8. At this point I wish they had signed Edwin Jackson. The Nats got him for one year for $11 million and he has been very solid so far.
  9. Your case for the Scutaro trade being a bad move is less than zero. Scutaro would have cost 6 million plus 40% luxury tax, and Aviles is playing better than Scutaro.
  10. The thing that's worrisome about Melancon is that there are reports that the Yankees lost him because they felt he just wasn't a bright lights kind of guy. And his first 2 outings for the Sox added far too much credibility to that notion.
  11. His fielding numbers have been consistently good. Not sure why you're disregarding the numbers. Anyway he's just a utility player. I agree the 2 years was surprising. But it's 1.5 million a year.
  12. I only pointed that out because you specifically said he had no business on a major league roster 'for a contender'.
  13. I agree, it's ridiculous to call Cherington clueless based on what he's done so far. Of course Fred and Nick don't even want to take into consideration the limited budget he had to work with. I'm actually surprised you would say that about the Punto acquisition because you're such a numbers person. He hit 278/388/421 and had a +14.2 UZR/150 for St. Louis last year, and they won it all.
  14. The statement that Aviles has been 'poor' offensively is just wrong. His OPS is .708 compared to the average OPS of .665 for AL shortstops. And that's without even considering the 36 RBI. I have no regrets about the Reddick trade. The Lowrie trade doesn't look too good because we don't know if Melancon will contribute anything. Most Sox fans always felt Lowrie could be a good hitter if he played every day and stayed healthy.
  15. Yeah, the first step to that for the Nats was finishing last a bunch of times and getting those top draft picks.
  16. There's no evidence that Red Sox players aren't 'giving it everything'.
  17. I think Middlebrooks has shown enough that he should be in the lineup over Youkilis. That's the problem.
  18. It's all relative. There may not be any really good teams in the AL this year. Texas looked great for awhile but they have really fallen back, 33-25 going into tonight. The biggest thing to me is that they are no free passes in the AL East anymore. We used to be able to fatten up our win total by pounding on the Rays (pre-2008), the Orioles and the Jays, and that's 18 games times 3. Now there are no easy games against those teams.
  19. He was 3rd in MVP voting in 2008 and 6th in 2009.
  20. I'm afraid the truth may be that Bard has always struggled with the mental part of the game and this starter experiment is only bringing it to full light. If you look at Bard's catcher splits it's kind of shocking. The only catcher he actually has great numbers with is Varitek. Absolutely lights-out with Varitek, mediocre to bad with everyone else.
  21. Oh yeah, I realize that. But I see you like positive trends too.
  22. Yes, posting a 6 ERA the first month kind of put us in a hole.
  23. I've been hearing very good things about it. I agree, Scott has done some great stuff...Alien and Blade Runner are classics.
