    Yes he does, but it's hard to judge how much of it is Farrell's fault. The Jays don't have great depth and they lost Bautista for the year, plus Lawrie and Arencibia for long stretches. Romero is having a terrible season. All the top managers have had losing seasons. On the other hand Farrell has never actually shown success as a manager. It looks like whoever we choose will be an unproven quantity. At least Farrell is well acquainted with the madness of Boston.

    Did anybody recognize the guy who pitched the 9th for the Jays? Brandon Lyon pitched for the Sox in 2003. He was part of the infamous 'closer by committee' program that year, and had 9 saves.

    Chapman now has 5 blown saves and 5 losses - Papelbon 4 blown saves and 6 losses. :harhar: (Just messin' with ya man. I need something to amuse me these days.)

    I'm only following the game on Gameday, but it's showing that Carpenter was hitting 95-97 with his fastball.

    I don't think losses are a very key stat for closers. Chapman has been totally lights-out but still has 4 losses. Some of those could be from getting put in tie games in the 9th inning or later, and maybe having to work a second inning.

    Ortiz will be an interesting case. I'd like to see him back. But in some respects re-signing him might not be the smart move.

    Last 20 games for Beltre: 418/447/949 10 HR 23 RBI You don't see a .949 slugging pct. for 20 games too often.

    I find the way Papelbon is talked about by some fans kind of symptomatic of the way Red Sox fans treat some of their best performers. Papelbon is easily the best closer the Red Sox have ever had, or since Dick Radatz I guess. But even though he's been one of the best at his position in team history, he still takes a lot of abuse. Nobody talks about the 25 straight scoreless postseason innings anymore, but they sure talk about the blown saves in 2009 and last September. Ortiz is another example. For the last few years a lot of people have been itching to send him on his way.

    I'm not terribly upset that Paps is gone, but mid-tier? I have to object to that. He's 31 of 35 in saves, which is bang on his career average. His WHIP is almost identical to his career average. His K/BB is a little better than his career average. And as always for the last 6 years, he's been perfectly healthy. Who exactly, besides Rivera, are you rating above Papelbon, and by what statistical measures?

    You're right. BV is the only story left this year and the Boston media is now focussed on him 24-7.

    It seems strange hearing this kind of hyperbole about a player who is muddling along with a line of 262/306/362 and 2 HR in 56 games. Perhaps the injury has contributed to the struggles, but perhaps that's not such a good thing either.

    Wow. They are really taking this sucking thing seriously. They've already got Valentine fired but that's not slowing them down in the least. Top 5 draft pick here we come.

    Halifax is great. There are a lot of Sox fans here. I was in Moncton, New Brunswick last weekend to see Springsteen, and there were a lot of people wearing Sox hats.
