I get what you're saying, believe me. This is just a theoretical debate and I don't think anybody can be proven wrong or right. But to me, intuitively, the objective of baseball is to get a lead and then keep it. Score early, then prevent. If in the hypothetical world a manager had Derek Jeter and Mark Belanger on his team, how would he use them? I think the majority of managers would play Jeter for the first 6-7 innings of a game and Belanger for the last 2-3 innings.

I think User Name is right when he says that scoring a run has slightly more value than preventing a run. The idea is to take a lead and then protect it. The team that scores first wins a surprisingly high percentage of games. The team that scores very few runs and gives up very few runs is going to be in a lot of tight games and extra-inning games and their pitching staff is going to get worn down as a result.

I'm not freaking about the Rays but they're not to be taken lightly IMO. Price missed a month and a half, in his first 2 starts since returning he gave up 1 run in 16 innings. Archer the punk has been pitching pretty well.

I think 'cruise' is a little wishful. The Rays are only 3.5 back and have a very good chance to be closer than that at the break, as they're at home to the Astros for the next three.

Gotta love the back to back sac flies. I think Salty had the most productive out you can possibly have (with no errors), moving runners up a total of 3 bases and contributing to 2 runs.

Huh? What season do you mean? His first full season was 2009. Looks more like he's improving as he approaches his prime years.

Our starting pitching has been a lot better than expected so far this year. But anybody who came into the season thinking there were 2 #1's on a staff where the top ERA last year was 4.56, was not grounded in reality. I seriously doubt that half the board said this though.

I sort of hate to bring this up again, but what if the Phillies were mainly interested in unloading Papelbon's contract and willing to take a mid-tier prospect only.

You plunk Trout if you're an Alex Wilson type. I'm not convinced that a 4-run lead vs. the Angels, with the guys they had coming up, is mop-up. Farrell gave Wilson the opportunity to show if he could be relied on in that situation and he f***ed it up royally. Really too bad when Bailey did such a good job.

To me the obvious question about last night's game is, why not Tazawa for the 9th inning? I assume the answer is that Farrell saw it as opportunity to rest both Uehara and Tazawa. But is a 4-run lead in the 9th really a 'safe' lead, even though it's not a 'save' situation? Debatable I guess. One thing I do know is that Francona used to use Papelbon quite a bit in the same situation. He wasn't much more comfortable with a 4-run lead than he was with a 3-run lead. You get a couple of guys on quick and suddenly things are dicey and you're scrambling to get your closer ready.

Are Sox players like Salty really any more gassed than comparable players on other teams, or does it just seem that way because we see our players every day? Wieters has played more than Salty. All-Star break is coming up soon.
