Well, we actually have a positive development - Trevor Story is hitting some baseballs hard. We really need this guy to be healthy and productive next year. If he is he fills 2 huge needs at once, solid infield defense and a right handed power bat.

Great piece of work, Maddie. You are really good at writing this stuff and I will be reading all your articles. And it's definitely a fun thing that we have done so well against Cole. Especially in that playoff game. Now, the unfortunate thing for me personally is that I'm feeling so down about the team lately, including the offense, and the first thing that occurs to me is this: In that last series vs. the Yanks we scored 14 runs in 37 innings - 7 against Cole in 4.1 IP, which was beautiful, 7 against pitchers not named Cole in the other 32.2 IP, which was horrid. How can they beat up on Cole like that but do nothing against the rest of the Yankee staff? (I realize part of the answer to that is that it's just a nutty game.) -
It's definitely not a top priority, except for replacing O'Neill if he's gone. Pitching is it.

Kimbrel has been very up and down since he left Boston. Great for streaks, horrible for streaks. He was in and out of the closer spot this year, now he's very much out, I think. It's a hard game. A very thin line between succeeding and failing at this level.

Cora always seemed like a guy who did believe in rest days. Maybe he looked at the Braves and thought they were succeeding by not resting. But as you say the payoff of this for the Braves looks questionable now. The Red Sox sure need to figure out why they run out of steam after the ASB each year in recent years.

Although I think every team would still love to have a closer like Emmanuel Clase. Not easy to find of course.

Baseball fans are being treated to a historic matchup tonight: the 36-115 White Sox visiting the 60-90 Angels. That's a combined record of 96-205! The White Sox are potentially the worst team in history, and the Angels have arguably been the most dysfunctional team in the game for a decade or so. What a matchup! 😁

On further review, the 1962 Mets played 161 games, with one tie! I somehow managed to delete from my mind any knowledge that there were ever ties in baseball.

22-34 in our last 56. That's .393 baseball. Last place far from out of the question. I hate to say it, but this is just not a good team, and the prognosis for next year is not really that great, in spite of the excitement surrounding the Fab Four. And we know now that John Henry is more than willing to keep punting until he thinks the time is right to get serious again.

Since we're all such analytical types, we should be willing to agree that when your projected % of making the playoffs drops down below 20% or whatever a reasonable threshold would be, you're not really "in it" any more.

They looked pretty good for a playoff spot at the ASB when they were 53-42. But it's been a crapshow ever since.

So we saved $10 million by trading a 35 year old pitcher, presumably because of his tendency to get injured, and we gave it to a 35 year old pitcher who is already injured. It was fellow poster Duran is the Man who really brought this paradox to my attention...

Alex is now under investigation by MLB for "saying the quiet part out loud" about Bello throwing at Judge in the 6th inning of Saturday's game as reprisal for Cole hitting Devers. Any guesses on what the punishment will be? Modest fine?

Did some analysis of the Red Sox 2024 run production, motivated by the idea that our offense hasn't been as good as some of the numbers suggest. Through 150 games we've scored 710 runs, or 4.73 per game. I have this theory that in general the goal in MLB is to score 5 or more runs in a game and give up 4 or less. That's based on the average runs per game in MLB usually coming in at around 4.5 per team. Now, what about extra inning games? I think we have to exclude extra inning runs because with the ghost runner, extra innings are a total crapshoot and run scoring is being inflated a bit. If we eliminate extra inning runs, the 2024 Red Sox have averaged 4.54 runs scored and 4.46 runs allowed per game. They have scored 5 runs or more 63 times, and allowed 4 runs or less 83 times. Wow! That seems to indicate our run prevention has actually done the job a lot more than our run production. Here's a breakdown of runs scored in regulation innings for the 150 games: 10 or more-9 times 9-8 8-9 7-13 6-12 5-12 4-22 3-16 2-20 1-23 0-6
