    Crazy thought of the day: if Dempster had been on the 2012 team, his 4.57 ERA would have been second on the team just barely behind Buchholz's 4.56.

    McAdam, though, is guessing that the team will keep the payroll at the same level it was at last year, even though the tax threshold increases by 11 million from 178 to 189. He may be right but my guess is that their limit will be closer to the 189 million.

    Texas would use him at 1B. He'd be a major upgrade over Moreland. They need offence.

    And the fact we're so tight to the cap this year (mainly because of the increased cost of the rotation) is what makes signing Ellsbury all the more difficult.

    Also re: inflation, the Yankees payroll for 2005 was higher than it was for 2012. Things have been crazy for longer than we realize.

    The Yankees overpaid on that deal though. I don't think the increase in this particular type of contract has been that great. Victorino got 13 million and his overall production/WAR would be similar to Damon's.

    It's the length that magnifies the risk into an unacceptable one. Just use an extreme example like Pujols. If his contract was 3 years at 24 million all you can lose is 72 million. But it's 10 years. If he gets injured or falls off the map performance-wise now, the Angels are looking at a possible loss of close to 200 million, which is crippling.

    Damon got 52 million. Ellsbury is projected to get more than double that. The difference in financial risk is huge.

    Baseball and football are so different that it makes for a difficult comparison. The two games require totally different types of intelligences.

    Nah, Fred, the Yankees are done with the big free agent signings. They haven't done one since their pre-2009 spending orgy. This is Hal's team now. OK, I'm messing with you a bit. But keep in mind they have to deal with Cano this year. And as every day goes by I'm hoping more and more that A-Rod wriggles out of his suspension so they have to keep paying his lying ass.

    Right. MLBTR projects he'll only get about 5 million this year through arbitration. But if he has a big year his arbitration price for 2015 will be much higher, right? I guess it all comes down to how the Marlins management wants to go.

    It wouldn't be a big shock if the Sox make a play for Stanton. It makes sense, with Ortiz winding down and with the list of prospects we have.

    Personally I think the budget for this year will be set at a point just under the tax threshold, as it has been in recent years. That leaves about $32 million to spend, more than that if they trade Dempster.

    Well, if we're going to go back and guess at things like this, I think Cherington wanted Farrell badly all along and would have dumped Sveum to get him this year.

    The one that's missing is the Mo Rivera strike zone. A little roomy on the outside.

    Good post, jung. The only thing I disagree with is that I think the Tigers were pretty damn close to taking us down.

    I would prefer to get Napoli back if it can be done on a reasonable deal. Frankly I'm putting my faith in Bodacious Ben.

    What's missing here, though, is the remarkable improvement in the starting pitching. I think some of the credit has to go to Farrell and Nieves for this.

    I think we have to be patient. There's one school of thought that the Sox are waiting for Napoli to get legit offers from other teams to see what they have to match.
