  1. Attendance as the #1 factor would indicate Cherington is doing fine.
  2. Very possible. But what 700hitter was talking about, and what I was also referring to, are moves that make us better now and improve our chances for making the playoffs.
  3. I find it credible in light of how long it took Duquette to get another GM job.
  4. From many accounts that I've read though, Duquette was acting like a paranoid nutjob toward the end of his tenure. I think that may have been part of the issue with him.
  5. Any move Ben makes at this point also has a strong possibility of blowing up in his face. Nobody's out to do us any favors.
  6. Ortiz's best months have always been June and July (and October).
  7. The 6 innings, 3 earned runs is of course the bare minimum for a QS. That point can't be stressed enough (LOL). I guarantee that a pitcher who produces a high number of QS's will have an ERA much lower than 4.50 in those starts. There is also the High Quality Start which I believe has a minimum of 7 innings, 2 earned runs. I agree with Palodios that 9 innings, 4 earned runs should be a QS, not that it happens very often.
  8. Failure may have been foreseeable. Destroying his ability to throw strikes and ending his career in the big leagues was not IMO. I don't think there are other cases quite like Bard's. They called it Steve Blass Syndrome, but Blass was always a starter, it just happened to him out of nowhere.
  9. What happened to Bard was rare and unforeseeable, IMO. Countless other guys go back and forth between starting and relieving without this kind of disaster occurring.
  10. Personally I think they want the best of both worlds - they want to make money and they want a winning team. I don't think they're trying to create the illusion of having a contending team. That illusion quickly vanishes in the face of being 10 games under .500. There's no way it is any fun for those guys to take the beating they have been taking so far this year.
  11. Good for JBJ, seriously. If he could get an offensive game going that would be a big plus for the team.
  12. Yep. But the offense has been on the rise lately, moving toward middle of the pack at least. Pitching is still in the basement.
  13. But we have the worst staff in the league.
  14. Yeah, it's the 8th time in June we've scored 4 or more runs and lost.
  15. The pitching hasn't performed like projected either.
  16. Miley has worked his way off the problem list for now.
  17. Those are bad numbers. But looking at the history, he has gotten much better in these venues in the second half of his career or so. In the new Yankee Stadium he has a 3.78 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 66.2 innings. And at Fenway his numbers have been quite good since 2011, in a fairly small sample.
  18. To the average fan, and I guess in many respects that's me, the Castillo deal is a bit of a head-scratcher. It's something new. A 72.7 million investment in a guy who is now almost 28 years old and appears to be not MLB-ready either as a hitter or a fielder. Especially when they grab a guy like De Aza off the scrap heap and you find out your manager likes him considerably better than the 72.7 million guy.
  19. Buchholz's numbers with Leon catching him are outstanding. 11 games - 74 innings - 2.80 ERA. Leon may have won a job for this alone - a David Ross caddy position.
  20. With perfect hindsight, plug Lackey in for Kelly and Shields in for Masterson, we keep all our prospects and add very little to this year's payroll.
  21. There were other options beside trading for Hamels. We could have not traded Lackey, or signed Shields, or done both, without a huge financial outlay. I agree that it's hindsight stuff. But I think most of us were at least a little shocked that they went into 2015 with the rotation they did.
