  1. Great day for golf. Jason Day wins the PGA for his first major. Canadian Brooke Henderson wins by 8 strokes for her first LPGA win.
  2. Right on cue, there was a scorer's decision in the Jays-Yankees game that showed some of the vagaries of errors, earned runs and unearned runs. With two outs in the third and nobody on, Tulowitzki hit a routine fly ball to Beltran, but Beltran lost it in the sun and didn't catch it. It was originally scored an error. Donaldson then singled and Bautista homered. The Jays' 3 runs were unearned. But later the scorer changed the call to a hit, and the 3 runs became earned. Is that something that would be factored into the pitcher's FIP?
  3. That could be, and it may also depend on which position is involved. It seems to me that most errors committed by the left side of the infield are either obvious boots or bad throws. Also it seems that where there is doubt, such as on a bad hop or an extremely hard hit ball, scorers will tend strongly toward calling those hits.
  4. True of course. But don't you think that a high % of errors are no-doubters - maybe 20% at most fall into the subjective category?
  5. Personally I think when the Sox put together the 2015 pitching staff they give the old wheel of fortune a big spin. Every single guy on the staff was risky except for Koji and Taz. I also think that mediocrity was the ceiling for this staff, not the most likely outcome.
  6. Not all errors are created equally, I agree 100%. Of course there are errors that fall in the no-doubt category.
  7. Thank God for the hernia. Strange but true.
  8. I'm guessing that Betances and Miller aren't available today.
  9. John Farrell has lymphoma and is leaving the team.
  10. It's pretty obvious Ben will be back for 2016. The big question now is what happens with the manager position.
  11. At least we don't have too see his mug every time we play the Rays now.
  12. He's the man Theo wanted though. Looks like another good move to me.
  13. How 'bout those Cubs? How 'bout that Jon Lester?
  14. Maybe they should compartmentalize and put Dipoto in charge of sprucing up our putrid bullpen for next year.
  15. I don't think the Sox ran quite enough computer simulations on Hanley Ramirez playing left field.
  16. I would have been very surprised if your response was anything different than that.
  17. According to Gammons, the Sox are also interested in hiring Pat Gillick as some sort of consultant.
  18. LOL Baseball-Reference lists him at 6'2" 203 lbs, so he was a decent sized individual back in his playing days.
  19. With the way major league baseball works now, you can have all the statistical analysis and scouting in the world and sometimes it all comes down to the personal judgment of whoever is making the calls. Whether or not to re-sign Lester or trade Lackey for example. Whichever move you make is going to be risky.
  20. One thing's for sure - it doesn't matter what statistics or method you use to evaluate our 2015 pitching staff. They take any possible confusion out of the picture.
  21. Needless to say JBJ could be a huge asset if he starts hitting.
  22. There are just so many inexplicable things about this year's team. If left field is a relatively easy position, and if Hanley's attitude and work ethic have been fine, why has he butchered it out there? Also, why is he unwilling to move to first base if that is the best fit for him?
  23. It's debatable whether Masterson was a bad risk or not, I guess. But $9.5 million was quite a bit for a dumpster dive. The end results were 59.1 innings and a fWAR of -0.2, for a negative dollar value of $1.7 million, for a net loss of $11.2 million.
