  1. The Verlander contract is not necessarily that bad yet either. He had a strong second half last year and even though his last 2 years were off-years he still had fWARs of 2.9 and 2.8.
  2. Yes, I agree. And they finished first 4 years in a row - something the Red Sox have never done in their history. I think Dombrowski is getting a bit of a bad rap with the whole 'win now' thing.
  3. I certainly disagreed with it.
  4. Scherzer's contract could end up bad too, no? All these big money deals are crazy risky.
  5. Avila has his work cut out, that's for sure. His first couple of moves seem to have been good ones.
  6. Personally I think Dombrowski did a pretty good job with the Tigers over the last decade. 86.4 wins per season, 5 playoff appearances, 4 trips to the ALCS and 2 pennants.
  7. That's the plain truth.
  8. If the two moves they make are the Kimbrel trade and the signing of Price, I don't think they are selling out the future of the team. They will have retained all the top prospects but Margot and Guerra, and not given up any draft picks.
  9. Tomase is right that the Red Sox organization has flipped-flopped with their 'philosophy'. Personally, I don't care. What does that really matter? There's no guaranteed way to success in MLB. There are a lot of teams in the hunt and a lot of money in the game. Every move you make carries risks.
  10. Maybe Tomase missed it, but the Red Sox did offer Lester 135 million, according to reports. Cherington had a pretty generous budget last year, IMO. They did manage to find a little over 400 million in the sock drawer for Castillo, Moncada, Hanley, Panda and Porcello. It seems kind of silly to suggest that Ben wasn't given any money to spend.
  11. Who did this quote come from?
  12. Whether we like it or not, we may very well need both Buchholz and Miley this year. We're not exactly loaded with good starting pitching.
  13. I think Price gets 7 years/$217 million. The fact that Lester is #3 on the list tells you all you need to know about baseball inflation.
  14. Seriously folks, it is just way too early to be arguing about where E-Rod starts the season.
  15. Alex Cora ‏@ac13alex 22m22 minutes ago Great news for the Red Sox, Hanley will play WinterBall. (@Enrique_Rojas1)
  16. There's an old saying that applies to Buchholz: his 'reputation precedes him.' If another starter had Buchholz's 2015 season (113.1 innings of 3.26 ERA, totally legitimate season-ending injury), we would feel much more upbeat about them.
  17. The only solution is for Hanley to hit like he's capable of. He does have a lifetime OPS of .861. We've got him out of left field. We have an opening at DH beginning in 2017. Yes, I've decided to go optimistic on Hanley. Why not? It's over 4 months till there are real games again.
  18. Seems to be some buzz about Greinke going to the Giants. Totally FWIW but somebody wrote a piece about Greinke not being totally happy with the clubhouse situation in LA. The Dodgers are currently in the process of hiring a new manager of course. Giants have plenty of money ready to shell out on a starter - remember they were all in on Lester last year. Giants have a pretty good recent history of winning the ring. All just thinking out loud for fun on my part.
  19. Lackey has been a solid 2 throughout his career, except for 2010 and 2011, when, I'm presuming, he was pitching hurt.
  20. Can't forget about Lackey either.
  21. It's a good thing for Dombrowski that he doesn't have big ears.
  22. All that really matters is what Greinke thinks.
  23. A lot depends on the individual. Last year Lester was down to 3 teams - Cubs, Sox and Giants. He eliminated the Giants, much to their surprise, even though they were reportedly offering more than the Sox and were prepared to keep swinging with the Cubs. Lester handled the situation like a rational human being. He knew he wanted to play for either the Cubs or the Sox for the next 6 years and he knew he was going to be paid an absurd amount of money in either case. Price could easily end up in the same situation.
  24. It makes sense to me, because for the most part, the optimists are or were Ben loyalists and very skeptical of Dombro and his methods.
