  1. Kimbrel got off to a rough start last year. Over his last 44 games he had a 1.44 ERA.
  2. One thing I'm quite sure of is they're not going to sign Davis. He'll be much too expensive, an albatross-in-waiting.
  3. It's what we do too. From the time we signed Castillo to the time we extended Porcello we spent over 400 million on 5 players.
  4. You're right about that, he's not a huge bargain at that price, and calling it a no-brainer is probably an overstatement. It was a move that made sense, that's really all it was.
  5. The fact that it's only a one year commitment played into it. The Dodgers could be out $48 million on McCarthy. Good pitchers are just incredibly expensive at this point in time. We ain't seen nothin' yet this offseason.
  6. It's November 15, sk. We have to think positive here IMO.
  7. You may disagree with this but I think a reasonable comp for Buchholz is Brandon McCarthy. McCarthy got 4 years and 48 million before the 2015 season.
  8. I think Kimbrel should be worth 1.5-2 more wins. And if we get to the playoffs, maybe 1 more win on top of that.
  9. That approach kind of sucked last year, you must admit. It was a rogues' gallery of stiffs. Again, our problem is that we're just not producing these guys internally. Papelbon, Tazawa, Bard - that's about it over the last decade.
  10. Most outrageous contracts for starting pitchers end up being bad contracts, too. I don't think it's such a bad thing having a closer who's good for a few seasons in a row. It worked well for the Yankees with Rivera. It worked well for us with Papelbon.
  11. With all that, he has a fWAR of 7.5 over the last 3 years. We all agree on his unreliability, but calling it a 'cult of Buchholz' is silly.
  12. I respectfully disagree. Koji and Tazawa ended last year on the DL. I love them both, but they could break down again at any time. I also don't think it's as easy as you say to get a closer who's as good as Kimbrel. Again I will mention the extreme difficulty Ben had in this regard, failing 3 times with Melancon, Bailey and Hanrahan. Theo also had a nasty one with Bobby Jenks.
  13. The consensus has been that exercising Buchholz's option was a no-brainer.
  14. I would not assume the tax threshold is an issue. I think John Henry is going Walter White.
  15. To me the message is that John Henry is all in on the 2016 season. He's had enough of this losing s*** just like us.
  16. The price was appalling, I won't argue that.
  17. There was a need for better pitching both in the rotation and the bullpen. Our major league team just got better, didn't it?
  18. It improves the 8th inning and the 7th inning too though. You do seem to be going out of your way to discredit the acquisition.
  19. Kelly seems to me like a lesser version of Buchholz-a total wild card. Last year he started off by pitching so badly they had to send him to the minors. When he came back he pitched much better, then ended the year on the DL. Giving him a tryout in the pen makes sense; counting on him to be able to close games seems like a shot in the dark.
  20. If we had been doing a better job of finding good relievers that way, this wouldn't have happened. I think there are different ways to get what you need, and no guaranteed formula either way. Signing the proven closer Foulke worked pretty well in '04. Cherington tried his darndest to acquire a proven closer for us - Melancon, Bailey, Hanrahan - before he finally had some good fortune with Koji.
  21. Do you think Koji is built for closer anymore?
  22. This post makes me feel good.
  23. But Greinke has the most mental health concerns. He'll likely be re-signing with the Dodgers.
  24. Scherzer's contract worked out to a present value of something like $27 million per year initially. So far it looks like a fair deal for them. But any team that trades for him will be looking at a higher present value AAV of course.
