  1. Fred, or a toned-down version of him, can now be found on the Boston.com forum. As can Pumpsie Green.
  2. Kimmi, I know all that. You always keep it classy.
  3. Last offseason the focus was on offense, and somebody decided we didn't need an ace that much. We did end up committing $95 million to Porcello, and that was also considered throughout baseball to be an overpay. This offseason the focus is back on pitching. In both offseasons, huge amounts of money have been doled out.
  4. The last place finishes stunk, but winning a World Series was a real accomplishment.
  5. Theo also overshot the market for Crawford.
  6. Yes - probably more. The nicknames are already in place - DUMBrowski etc.
  7. Theo and Ben also threw tons of money at players. In a period of months Ben spent over $400 million on new contracts.
  8. It all depends how much longer the current rate of salary inflation continues.
  9. Dombrowski doesn't mess around.
  10. Strange but true.
  11. My earliest Sox memories involve guys like Siebert and Culp, with Ken Coleman calling the games. Siebert had a no-hitter going one night and Fenway was rocking. This is how I became a Sox addict.
  12. For better or worse, Henry is the guy who controls this team. He's the one who replaced Ben with DD. He's the one who sets the budget. I think the fact he hired DD indicates he's very fed up with losing and isn't shy about spending. At the end of the day we're only along for the ride anyway. Might as well try to enjoy it and not worry about 2019 right now.
  13. The worst stretch for me was 1980-1985. The post-dismantling years.
  14. The worst examples of an entitled attitude among Sox fans that I have seen occurred during the years 2008-2011, when I saw constant abuse being heaped on management and players for one reason or another. That was before I joined this forum, so everyone here is off the hook.
  15. I think the only way you can do comparisons that make any sense at all is using W-L records.
  16. I much prefer being hated.
  17. From my perspective, there was nothing nice about being the loveable losers. It was decades of frustration.
  18. Losing Epstein was a blow. Whether he was fired or whether he jumped when he had the chance is another question.
  19. Signing Chen and Lackey over Price appeals to me too. But they won't be cheap either. And we'd lose our #12 pick.
  20. My guess, and it's only that, is that Cleveland wants Betts or Bogaerts as part of a deal for Carrasco. Cleveland reportedly wants some major-league ready offensive talent. They don't have to trade Carrasco or Salazar right now. Why would they want to do so for a package of players who are years away from helping, if at all?
  21. But what is long term success - forever? Can it really be done, with the way baseball is structured now - with much more money spread around and much more parity in the standings?
  22. Our problem is that we have been lousy at producing pitching, and acquiring good pitching by free agency or trade has become incredibly expensive. There's no way around it.
  23. They won the division 4 years in a row. That is a long run. The Red Sox have never even finished first twice in a row in the last century. I think Dombrowski's approach with Detroit was fine. He was trying to win championships. They didn't do it, but they made it to the ALCS 4 times and the WS twice. The only major difference between them and us is that we won the rings.
  24. Whoops, my bad. Goddam Baseball-Reference...his player page there says otherwise. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/chenwe02.shtml
  25. Chen isn't a free agent though. And Chen and Lackey probably cost 20 million a year at free agent rates.
