  1. In my neighborhood pitching cards was a mano a mano game of high skill between young boys! Two boys each with their collection of baseball cards or hockey cards or whatever they were, would stand a certain distance from a wall. You would each pitch a card low toward the wall. Whoever came closest to the wall was the winner and collected the two cards. A 'leaner' against the wall was the perfect pitch. But if you pitched a leaner first the other guy could knock down your leaner and win. That's all I remember of the rules.
  2. $90M for a reliever. We are really through the looking glass if that happens.
  3. You do have a case against Mr. Buchholz.
  4. I don't think so - not if the 'bonuses' are tied to something like appearances. Remember Napoli's deal in 2013 - it was $5 million base with an additional $8 million available for staying off the DL.
  5. If he looks good in his workouts, $5 million base plus x amount per appearance?
  6. Did anybody pitch cards when they were a kid?
  7. It will be interesting. But not every team is going to have an Andrew Miller and a Cody Allen at their disposal. You have to have a couple of studs to be able to utilize that strategy on a consistent basis.
  8. Hate that one too. But the blind squirrel is worse.
  9. I agree. And I don't blame Tito for overusing him, either. He did what he had to do with Carrasco and Salazar gone, and he almost made it pay off in a title.
  10. I probably would if they made them.
  11. It'll be interesting to see how he does next year after pitching so many innings this year.
  12. Jesus I hate that blind squirrel expression.
  13. Yes, I certainly expect DD to do his DD (due diligence).
  14. I cheer for the laundry too, but to me, like it or not, the laundry includes the suits (Dombrowski).
  15. The bottom line is, nothing can be done about what's been done.
  16. I suspect they will hang on to Schwarber. He was very impressive in his mini-comeback. He seems to have a fantastic attitude too. I have a feeling he might be a great hitter.
  17. There's no question that the current version of Andrew Miller is a very valuable commodity. He had a 3.9 bWAR this year and a 2.9 fWAR. When you combine his lights-out numbers with his ability to pitch more than an inning at a time, that's definitely a weapon.
  18. Yeah, but that's some serious 20/20 hindsight. Miller has turned out to be better than anyone was expecting, really.
  19. Regardless, it's very presumptuous to claim the Yanks would just walk away from a guy they obviously wanted. Things haven't changed that much.
  20. No, that was 2012. In 2013 his WHIP went up to 1.37, which is lousy, and he missed the last half of the season. That illustrates some of the risk factors.
  21. They offered him 4/32. That's been established, hasn't it? The Yanks went 4/36. We had to outbid that. It was an auction.
  22. Lest we forget, the Yankees are an even richer franchise than we are. It's generally been considered bad business practice to try to outbid them because the money will get so stupid. There seems to now be a belief that Hal is cracking down and they are being much more sensible, so you can actually outbid them. Maybe.
  23. Well all your points are irrelevant too! Just kidding. As far as the money is concerned, though, what does 'competitive offer' mean? I'm pretty sure Miller was looking for the most he could get, plain and simple. It represented quite possibly the one big payday of his career. I'm guessing we would have gone as high as 4/40, but it's quite likely the Yanks would have stepped that up. And in any case you're talking about by far the most money ever paid to a reliever with one career save.
  24. One interesting thing about closers and relievers is that their value can skyrocket in the postseason-especially with all the off-days that gives the big guns extra time to recover. It was an eye-opener to see how much Theo was willing to give up to rent Chapman.
