I'm not knocking Wright, but steady and consistent is stretching it. Last year he had a 2.01 ERA with a .559 OPSa in his first 14 starts and a 5.55 ERA with a .795 OPSa in his last 10 starts. None of which means he can't be a big contributor in 2017. -

The real story in those projections for us is the 93 wins taking the AL East by 10 games. Gotta like that.

In a way it's comical that they're projecting him for 18 starts. Realistic, though.

I don't disagree. There are just so many things can go wrong though, especially with the pitching, and I don't think that's a pessimistic view.

All owners seem to have been winners in the new CBA. I don't see how baseball revenues can grow much more considering the overall economy. The bubble has to burst eventually.

100% correct. And what Sox fans have to keep in mind is that not only is the team bumping up against the tax threshold for 2017, their payroll for tax purposes doesn't even include the 22+ million plus they're paying Castillo and Craig. Little wonder that JH is trying to draw the line a bit.

a) Only cost 5.5 million so he fit the budget. Good defensive 1B, lets Hanley move to DH and improves our run prevention. c) Average hitter with 20+HR pop and has good numbers at Fenway. If we're lucky he might even be an asset with the stick.

There's Chris Young as well. A lot of bad stuff would have to happen for the FO to do what you're suggesting with Swihart.

These pre-season projections are usually fairly conservative. I don't like the 103 win projection though. Personally I think we are about the same in overall strength as last year. Losing Papi will cost us about 5 games. Acquiring Sale should offset that loss. The rest is about even.

93 wins is reasonable. This indicates that FanGraphs assesses the overall strength of the 2017 team as about the same as the 2016 team.

Unfortunately that would create the same roster issues with 7 starters, with E-Rod the only one of them that can be sent to AAA, and as we've established, nobody wants E-Rod in AAA. Hanging onto the money for when it's really needed seems to be the right policy at the moment.

Teams generally don't do strict salary dumps in deadline trades. You usually have to give to get, right? It would be terrible management to pay 2/3 of a guy's salary and then just hand him off to a contender who only has to pay the final 1/3.

Yeah, JBJ only played an awesome centerfield and hit .267 with 26 HR and 87 RBI. Guys like that grow on trees. Get rid of him!

The only way to acquire another proven reliever was to trade more prospects or use up another 6-8 million of our precious room under the tax threshold. Neither option was very appealing.
